I told myself im not gonna get involved but screw it. Lot of ppl dont know what feminism is. Trust me, if ppl knew what it really was abt, 90% of ppl that shy away from that term would be feminists themselves. Ppl instead just have the stereotypes of the radical feminists in their minds when they think of what it means to be a feminist. My apologies if someone alrdy said this but since I'm fighting actually getting involved in this discussion, I'll just throw that in the ring. My second major is gender studies so I can go on abt this for days :/
It's that kind of thinking I disagree with Sasha. Women are just as capable of oppression as men are. But we definitely need to stop assuming an entire group of people is oppressing another. Oppression is something done by some people to an entire group of people. Some women oppress men. Some men oppress women.
A fit guy in only swim shorts will get as much attention as a fit woman in a bikini ? Yet woman are all like PERVS! When they catch a guy looking. If a guy acted like that when a woman checked him out. He would be classed as gay and or deviant. Gotta love our society  i read a few comments, thats my opinion on what i saw
I hate how woman are deemed double deviant for commiting crimes tho ? what if i wanna rob a bank or kill someone? Just because I'm a woman, i especially shouldn't?.? then again, i could just get a guy to fo it  why break a nail when you have guys to do it for you? ooh was that sexist? :?
Even tho this is titled the feminism discussion is about issues that relate to feminism and we're talking about men and women. Feminists and people that aren't feminists. It's pretty broad.
Although, i love how some feminists complain about the stereotype of a woman, house wife  id happily sit on my ass everyday and spend my husbands money than work for shit  my culture is past that age tho :?
Lol, I didn't know there a woman clause in the law system. You get extra penalties for committing a crime as woman? I would think in the patriarchal world we live you'd get less jail time because you're weaker than men. Oy vey.
Anna, yes women can oppress men but it would not be to the same extent as women have been oppressed. Men would never have to suffer as much because of all the advantages they have over women. Just saying
What do you mean what kind of advantages? Salary, rights, education, the list goes on and on! 70 million children aren't receiving an education right now and want to know how many of those kids are girls? 53 million of them. Boys have the advantage the minute they're born. They're more likely to receive an education. They're more likely to be treated more fairly than women are. They're more like to get the job. They're more likely to get into the Ivy League. They have the advantage because they've had the power for far longer. I'd venture to say that the majority of societies are patriarchal. Even in this time.
I don't think men are inclined to lust for women to the point they wish to harm the women in order to take what they want. If anything a person like that is just that way because they're messed up mentally. I agree that no means no. There is no reason to keep harassing a woman after she has said no she has no interest in you. That is blatant sexual harassment and should be dealt with immediately. The issue is that the "rape" and "sexual harassment" like "sexism" gets thrown around too lightly. You have women saying that they should be free to show off their beautiful bodies no matter what, to the extent that you have Scout Willis parading around New York in protest of instagram's nudity policy. I understand that it's legal in NY but that doesn't mean you should do it. Unless you have a reason for walking around topless, don't. Moreover the expectations of women today (not feminists) are kind of outrageous. You're asking men to stop being enticed by your bodies. You're asking they stop being turned on by the female body. So much so that male feminists or just men in general are fearful of giving you a compliment or admiring how beautiful the female body is. It is beautiful. The female body is treasure. The body (of anyone) is a treasure. I thought treasures were meant to be hidden not put on display.
Just gonna add this then i really am done. When women oppress men those r specific, interpersonal situations. When women r oppressed it stems from SYSTEMIC issues. Way different. So that NEEDS to be acknowledged and changed. Also i agree w what captain said. We kinda have to say men can be also for the reason that he stated. We as feminists dont want men to feel alienated from the movement, and if theyre down for equality then we surely welcome them! Oh and just a reminder that we r all oppressors and all oppressed in different ways. When we fail to acknowledge the ways in which our unearned privilege due to sex, race, nationality, ability, etc. gives us unfair power and advantages over others, then that is a problem. Feminism sheds light on these power dynamics that we cant ignore if we want to progress as a society (or world in general).
Alright Sasha I see. I asked because I wanted to get a more clear understanding of where you're coming from. Yes atm the moment salaries are still more favorable toward women. And that's highly unfair I agree. If a man and a woman do they same job and do it equally well they deserve the same pay hands down I don't agree tho that a man automatically has it easier today. In fact I have been reading and seeing articles and books about the amazing rise of female power. Be it in the job field or education. Women do it better is what's being said. In fact you do realize that boys are likely to go to college. Did you also know that the in terms of educational proficiency females are generally always in the lead. I'm not saying girls are better. But damn if every woman would band together with other women and stop tearing each other down you'd probably see MATRIARCHAL society. So no one has an advantage per se anymore. At least not where I'm from. Want success? Get up and go get it.
Uh anna that wasn't my point. Society deems criminals deviant as well as Woman criminals deviant. So woman have double the pressure to conform to norms than men
That's true... Female oppression is more systematic. But that's not to say male oppression is always personal or rarely impersonal. I'm saying both things happen, and they both need to be addressed. Ever heard the saying "let boys be boys"? I think society atm doesn't want boys to be boys or men to be men.
