With this definition in mind, I crocheted and shuttle tatted a lace piece representative of the Greek myth of Arachne. The top half of the piece represents Arachne's famed tapestry that she wove in a competition with Athena, which enraged the goddess so much that she hit Arachne in the head with her shuttle- represented through my use of shuttle tatting for the spider. The spider is Arachne after Athena transformed her, so that she and her offspring would forever weave.
(disclaimer: As with much folklore, the oral story has transformed over the centuries, and I also chose not to include the trigger warning pieces here.)

Materials were size 10 cotton thread, 1.5mm crochet hook, a tatting shuttle, and a needle. Pattern is self wrote.
The perfectionist in me wants to rewrite the pattern a touch- but time constraints. 😪

    Teke Teke
This is the folklore I based my art on.
The story goes that a female student named Kashima Reiko fell onto the train tracks and got hit by an oncoming train which severed her in half. Attendants nearby did nothing to help her and she died a slow and agony death. She became a vengeful ghost who now haunts train stations at night in search of her missing half. She moves around by her legs and her spine scrapes the ground cause the "Teke Teke" sound.

    Mavka (Ukrainian Folklore)

A Mavka is a forest spirit that takes the form of a beautiful young woman. Enchanting and ethereal, she dwells deep within the woods, where she lures unsuspecting travelers with her haunting songs and otherworldly grace. Those who follow her into the forest are said to never return, their souls forever lost among the trees.

    Explanation:
Folklore is a type of story either real or fictional that is used to teach a lesson or have a deeper meaning behind the actual story itself. One of my favorite stories is that of "Pandora’s Box" which teaches that curiosity can be good, but only in the right moments as being curious in the wrong things can be dangerous. Pandora was curious about the "box" she was given by the gods as a wedding gift because she was instructed to never open it.. Curiosity got the better of her, and upon opening it, she released the suffering and sins of mankind. Desperate and fearful of what she had done, she rushed to close it, leaving "hope" left inside. She dared not open it again. This story is usually told to children who are taught to obey their parents and what they say, or else there could be dire consequences for their betrayal and disobedience.

  15. Theme 3: Sacrifice

I’ve risen from the dead (aka hiatus) to present this week's theme :0)

Though this theme may coincide with spooky ideas, just note that it doesn’t have to! Any interpretation of this theme is acceptable, as long as you can explain your artistic vision.

Here’s my example interpretation of the theme for funsies:

Went with a Southern Gothic feel, and I love me some blood sacrifices personally 😎🖤
