There's not a specific way, but on rare occasions the developers may recognize a player for outstanding contributions to the community and award them with the role. You can check out Muschi's guide here about Mods, Honor Students, and Developers.
It's extremely rare that honor student is awarded. But it recognizes players with outstanding contributions and positive presences on the game. Helping players, making guides, hosting contest etc are all positive things to contribute. There is no specific criteria for the award though.
