I was told when I was at school, that, instead of slitting your wrists, you can ping yourself with an elastic band.

 

I remember in school. We would play rock paper scissors. But our right hands would be in the 'thumb war' position with a rubber band. And whoever lost in rock paper scissors would get hit with the rubber band.
