Hello friends! I’m [ATA] Jessica, a freelance writer working on PIMD and WAMS stories, and I’m so excited for this year’s Pride Month! This year, our Pride content is inspired by weddings! There are so many kinds of queer relationships and we wanted to celebrate them. For most of my life and that of several of the dev team, queer relationships were not recognized in our home countries and being openly queer was (and still is in many places) illegal. (And if the wedding theme doesn’t resonate with you, feel free to view these as the big queer prom we always wanted! You don’t have to be in a relationship to dance up a storm and eat delicious treats!) I realize that today, the fight for marriage equality may seem small. It’s easy to forget how hard of a fight it was or how much it changed. To have a relationship legally recognized means visitation rights at hospitals. It means health insurance. It means freedom from fear of eviction or unemployment due to your relationship status or sexuality. On a personal note, as a bi/pansexual woman, I was very anxious about my own wedding. I was asked at my wedding (to a man) if “the bi thing was over now.” As if you simply lose a part of who you are based on who you choose to spend your life with. Bisexual people are often told to leave their partners home from Pride events, which is, in my opinion, just another form of bisexual erasure. If you are queer and in a relationship, it doesn’t matter to me what your partner’s sexuality or gender identity is: you are in a queer relationship! So much of my early coming out was laced with shame and anxiety. Bisexual women were viewed as either promiscuous or “pretending for male attention.” I remember describing myself as “hetero-flexible” because I was too uncomfortable with any words I knew. As I get older and see queer folks of all gender identities and sexualities growing up without shame, my heart is filled with joy. When I see people asking why there was the need to “come out,” because their friends and families just knew and accepted them, words cannot express how happy I am. Progress! It happens! Sometimes! One of the things I’m most excited about with this month’s Pride celebration is the different types of relationships, gender identities, and body types shown. This is a celebration of queer folks of all varieties, be you LGBTQIA+, MOGAI, QUILTBAG (yes, I am an old millennial), or something you don’t yet know how to or want to describe. In a time when so many of our rights are or are on the brink of being taken away, the time to celebrate our wins and fight for further gains is now. Celebrate your love and celebrate yourself!
