Well, here is an update. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Chapter 2 I stood there in shock, hearing my name being announced. I felt everyone turn to me, eyes watching my every move. Watching to see if I would break down. Watching to see if I would run away, away from the Peacekeepers, away into the Meadow, away to safety. But I did''t. I stood my ground and started walking to the Justice Building's steps. "Rose!" I heard. I turned to see Hunter running towards me. He ran into my arms, whispering, "Don't go, Rose. Please don’t." "I'm sorry, Hunter," I whispered back, frowning at him. I saw him release me and walk back to the ropes, head hanging. I turned back to the Justice Building, glancing at Matt as I do. He is expressionless to the ones surrounding him, but I knew he was hiding his sadness. I walked up to the Justice Building and climbed the steps, hiding the fear that wanted to spring upon my face. I stood beside my mother who was smiling at everyone. I looked out into the crowd, scanning to see Matt's brother, Daniel. I looked for the one I knew would give me courage, just with his eyes and drink in hand. But Haymitch wasn't there. Haymitch died a few years after I was born from alcohol poisoning, but that was a bit obvious that it would happen. I missed him and his drunkenness. I knew he would have given me courage, but that wouldn’t happen now. I saw Victor, the mayor's son. He was nodding at me when his eyes locked with mine. My eyes shinned with happiness towards my friend. After all, I did business with him every time I hunted. "Now, the gentlemen," she smiled as she walked over to the glass ball that held the gentlemen’s names. I held my breath as her hand mixed around the names until her hand clasped a slip. She pulled it out and opened it, not hesitating to say the name. "Matt Odiar." I let out my breath, watching Matt climb up the steps. He stood beside me, still showing no expression. My mother smiled at the crowd, to keep the small show running. "Congratulations to our tributes!" my mother exclaimed, showing fake enthusiasm. Matt and I looked at each other, knowing that our death awaited us. Peacekeepers escorted us into the Justice Building, for out time of goodbyes. I walked into a room and sat down on the sofa, scared out of my mind. First was my brother, scared for me. He hugged me and cried on my shoulder, egging on my own tears. We cried until he pulled back and said, "Win this for me. I know Matt will be in there with you, but please, win for me." I felt tears run down my face again as I kissed his head, his golden hair tickling my nose. I ruffled his hair as I looked into his grey eyes and said, "I'll try my best, but don’t be surprised if I die." He nodded and walked out of the room, leaving me to await my next guest. It was Annie, Matt's mother. Rumours said that she went crazy in the Games, but Finnick brought her back to reality, right before his mission and got himself killed to save my mother and father. "Annie," was all I said. "Rose, try to keep him alive, alright?" she asked, tears in her eyes. "He reminds me so much of Finnick, even though he isn't Matt's real father; I don't want to lose him too." "You have Daniel but, I'll try, Annie." She pulled the sea green pendant bracelet off of her wrist and gave it to me. "Finnick gave this to me as a wedding gift. I want you to wear it for luck and as your token." I put it on, smiling at Annie. "Thank you, Annie. Thank you." I hugged her as Peacekeepers pulled her away. She nodded at me as she left, a tear falling onto the floor. My next guest was someone I never thought I would see. "Hello, dear," Effie said, sitting slowly next to me. "E-Effie?" I asked, shocked. "Yes. The one and only," she smiled weakly. Her voice was weak, but still high pitched, trying to keep her shine from the years before. She wasn’t wearing one of her famous wigs, any of her make up, just her own face. She had white hair with strands of black. She had once had black hair! He lips were cracked and her face had few wrinkles, thanks to those treatments in the Capitol. "I thought you were-" I stared. "I was, but I came to see your mother and father, and you and Hunter. Just one thing, dear," she said. She took off the pendant and took it in her hands. "You won't need this, as your mother wants to give you something." "But Annie gave it to me." "Understandable. But, you can wear it next year, if you win," she smiled. "And I know you will. You have a grand shooter, climber, trapper, and survivor for a mother. And you have a skilful painter, a strong and loving man, and a survivor for a father. You can win. And you will, dear." "But Matt…" I trailed off. "Don’t worry, those Careers will stay away from him. And his father was a brave man to risk his life for your mother and father's. He has bravery in him, even though Finnick isn't his real father." She stood slowly, using the sofa arm for support. "I must go now. You can win, Primrose. I feel like I am talking your aunt right now when really it's you." She smiled and walked through the door, Peacekeepers helping her walk. The door opened to reveal Victor. He walked over to me and hugged me quickly. When he pulled back he said, "I can't believe you are leaving, little Huntress." "Huntress" was my nickname from him. He was the only one who called me that, but I knew that was going to change soon. "I know, Vic. I know. But you know there is Hunter. He can hunt, somewhat," I sighed. Ironically, Hunter wasn't a very good hunter. He gathered, mostly. He was a poor shot, hated killing or seeing animals killed. Mom said he was like our dead Aunt Primrose. "You know what I'm thinking when you mention him. Father doesn't like it when they are cut all over just so they die. But he is a good gatherer, and Mother likes blueberries. I'll give him a chance. And we'll house him this year, since you won't be here." He smiled at me warmly, causing me to start crying again. He pulled me into his arms and said, "You know I hate betting, but this year, I will bet on you. I promise." His black hair brushed my cheek, causing me to smile. "You are an amazing huntress, so I know you can win." He was pulled away by Peacekeepers soon after he said that. As he left he said, "Remember, I believe in you!" I sighed as the door closed, knowing that there weren't any more guests to see me. I waited until the Peacekeepers entered my room and escorted Matt and I to the car waiting for us. I had ridden in a car a few times before, a benefit to having parents as victors. The sleek black car drove us to our death as I held Matt's hand. When we arrived at the train station, I made sure to look like I was crying as Matt kept a straight face. The cameras watched us get on the train with my mother and father, clearly getting the shot of Matt and I holding hands. As I watched at the trees in the Meadow disappeared, I let go of Matt's hand and sat down on the red velvet couch. I sat there putting my head in my hands, knowing what will become of us. I know that I will be stuffed, put on display for the Capitol. The legendary Girl on Fire's daughter, killed in the Arena. Matt would probably just be buried, or something better than what I would get. After all, neither of his parents' shot an arrow into the chink of the force field, starting the rebellion. His mother didn't become the Mockingjay, killing Coin instead of Cornelius Snow. Matt sat next to me, putting his arm around me. I shrugged him off, obviously not in a good mood. He backed off and just sat next to me, waiting for my parents. I heard my parents come in and sit in front of us, waiting for me to look at them. After a few minutes, I looked up from my hands, seeing them frown at me, not in disappointment, but in sorrow. "Matt, Rose, you know that the trick" my mother started and took my father's hand, "with the nightlock berries will not help you. They know that you have heard the story, will want to try that trick. But they won't hesitate to blast one of you away. Not like Crane let us live." She gripped onto his hand tighter, thinking about her stunt in the Games. "Mom, I don't think they will have those, not while I am in there. If it comes down to us, I don't know what I’ll do," I said with a sigh. Matt patted my back and said, "I agree." Then I stood, asking an Avox to lead me to my room. "Send someone for me at dinner!" I called as I entered my room. I tore off my dress and picked out a purple shirt and light brown slacks. I slipped off my shoes and fell onto my bed. I fell asleep there, thinking about how I was going to die. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I do not need anymore characters, cuz I think I got them all, just so y'all know. Thanks to those that gave me characters, though.
Here is an update! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Chapter 3 I could hear it. The mockingjay was calling for me. And I was following it, through the Meadow, wanting to see where it would take me. I dodged branches, jumped over roots, listening to the song it sang. It was so familiar. Then, it clicked into my brain. Deep in the meadow, under the willow A bed of grass, a soft green pillow Lay down your head, and close your sleepy eyes And when they open, the sun will rise. Here it's safe, here it's warm Here the daisies guard you from every harm Here your dreams are sweet and tomorrow brings them true Here is the place where I love you. It was the lullaby my mother sang to me when I was a small child. I followed the wonderful bird, knowing it would lead me to a wonderful place. Then I fell, falling far as I heard the words from the goodbyes. "You can win." "Win for me." "I believe in you." "I'll bet on you, I promise." Then I woke up, felling myself being shaken. I opened my eyes and saw the blonde haired Avox who walked me to my cabin earlier. "Time for dinner?" I asked. She simply nodded, unable to speak. There was fear and worry in her eyes. She had watched me as I passed through my nightmare. "I'll be alright," I smiled at her. "After all, it was just a dream." She smiled slightly and nodded. My dress had been picked up off of the floor and put away, never to be seen again. I opened the door to my room, finding Matt. "Oh, there you are," he said. I simply nodded, looking at him suspiciously. "You mother and father sent me after the Avox," he simply explained. "Ah," was all I said as I walked past him. He stopped me my grabbing my arm. "Rose, are you alright?" he asked with worry hiding in his voice. "Matt, I'll be fine," I smiled. And I knew that was the truth. At least for the time being. Then I would be dead. "Alright," he said and walked with me to dinner. My eyes widened at the sight. We had had many good foods even off the train, but this was amazing. Foods I had never seen where there. I sat down next to my mother, staring at the banquet that awaited me. "Ah, sweetheart. I notice you seem...hungry," my mother commented. That was true. I hadn't eaten since the night before, saving my appetite for the feast that never came. I was famished. I couldn't figure out what to eat first. My father smiled at me as he gave me some poultry. It was delicious! I had never had anything like it! I tried to eat as politely as possible, but it was so good! "Dear, don't eat too much," my mother said, handing me a drink I recalled to be hot chocolate. I drank a small amount as I pushed the poultry away. After a while, I stopped eating, thinking I would explode. My mother clapped her hands and said, "Time to watch the reaping." We stood and left the Avoxes to clean the table. I sat on the red velvet sofa and pulled my knees to my chest, not really wanting to watch. District 1 tributes were easy to remember. Cornelius and Elizabeth Snow, children of Abigail Snow. Next was 2, also easy to remember. Gale's son, Harold, and Helena Grace. I couldn't remember 3, but 4's girl had an interesting name. Sapphire, was her name. Pretty. Five had twins. I couldn't remember their names, but the looked like foxes. "Reminds me of Foxface, they do," my mother commented. So I decided to name them the Fox Twins. 6 was nothing, but 7 had a friend of my mother's son. His name was Scorpio Mason, how could I forget. And the girl was Allora Flema. 8, 9, and 10 didn't seem hard. But my mother gasped when the fourteen year old girl for 11 was reaped. "Rue," she whispered and burried her head into my father's chest. "It's alright, Katniss," he said, frowning. "But her name is Willow, Mom," I said, confussed. "Rue was a little girl in our first Hunger Games. She died in Katniss' hands. Your mother left her with flowers," my father answered as my mother wiped her eyes dry. "Could we stop talking about this and see who's in 13, please?" my mother asked. We all nodded and watched the television. In 13 there was a girl name Betrix. I could never forget that name. And there was Julius, the boy tribute. I turned off the television and said, "I'll be in my room." I stood and walked to my room, Matt following me. I stopped at my door, sighing. "Matt," I said as I turned. "Rose, don't," he said, pulling me into a hug. I sighed again as he did, not wanting to get too attached. "We'll be fine," he whispered and kissed me gently. I nodded, pulling back. I was in a bad enough mood already, knowing I would be destroyed by Gale's son or the Snow children. "I'm going to sleep. Good night," I said and pushed my door open, hearing Matt sigh. I fell on my bed, exhausted, upset, and dying. I fell asleep soon after, not bothering to do anything but lay there. Then came my dream, or should I say nightmare. I saw many mockingjays, surrounding me. Then I heard a scream, a yell, a call. I heard something barreling towards me, ready to attack. Then I saw them. Yes, them. I saw Gale's son, the Snows, Helena, Sapphire, the Fox Twins, Willow, Betrix, Julius, every tribute. They were trying to get past the mockingjays, trying to get to me. And they were succeeding. Then I saw their eyes. They were empty, black, no color in them whatsoever. They were not there, just empty souls. I watched them tearing at the beautiful birds, ripping them to shreds. I wanted to move, I wanted to run, but I seemed paralized. I felt stuffed, not with food or drinks, but with material. Then they tore the last mockingjay away, finally getting to me. And that's when I screamed. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
