When Zoey pushed open Ryleigh's bedroom door 15 minutes later, she found her best friend sitting cross-legged on the floor with her red-rimmed eyes glued to the TV in front of her and a box of tissues by her side. Ryleigh looked up. Seeing her best friend, she began crying harder. "Oh, sweetie, don't cry," Zoey said, rushing to her friend's side. "Where's Candice?" "Hah! Yes, my mother cares enough to tell me where she's going. She's probably still out at some bar with her sl*t best friend," Ryleigh grumbled bitterly. "A sh*tty mother's worse than no mother. You're better off," Zoey said convincingly. "Anyway, what happened?" Ryleigh gestured to the TV, which showed a reporter standing in front of the Scottsdale house.

"Jacob Scottsdale was shot in his sleep around 3:00 this morning. He was alone in the house when someone snuck in, put a gun to his head, and killed him. There was no sign of forced entry. The police have prime suspect Whitney Porter in custody right now. Whitney was said to Jacob's girlfriend. Her lipstick was found on his face and her fingerprints are rumored to have been found on the gun. Jacob was 18 and a senior at Appleridge High School. More on this story this afternoon. Zoey clicked off the TV and turned to face her best friend, a somber look plastered across her face. "Ryleigh, I need to tell you something, but you need to PROMISE you won't tell ANYONE." Ryleigh started to answer, but before she could say anything, Zoey's phone rang. Glancing down at the screen, Zoey started to panic as she read the caller ID. Trying to stay calm in front of Ryleigh, she longed for the time when this number was unfamiliar. She looked up at Ryleigh. "I gotta take this. It's my mom," she lied as she raced out the room and downstairs. Alone on the back porch, she flipped her phone open. "What do you want, b*tch?" she growled. "I know what you did, sl*t. I am NOT going to jail for you. I posted bail. I'm out, bitch. And I'm gonna find the proof to lock you up," the woman on the other line threatened. "Oh yeah? Well, I'm not going to jail for you, either, b*tch. Good luck," Zoey said, hanging up the phone.
