It's sad that people know so little about astronomy and how it ties into the biology of living organisms. All sciences tie tigether but if you only know one side, you'll get confused when you see more branches come into the picture.
Since matter is neither created not destroyed, I would argue that yes, at some point we were either stars. Or at least made from the same stuff stars are.
