Bury fly in ash (doesn't matter what kind) Mumble some "magic" words for a few mins, keeping an eye on the ash Within a few mins, the ash soaks all the water out of the fly's abdomen, and it will fly away true story
I did this with a wasp once. Just have to be careful because if you tie too tight around the head, it can actually cut it off. RIP first wasp.
