Something Missing

A few months later...

Married life... it was nice and I enjoyed it. Rafe had a job at a local middle school teaching eighth graders and I was working as a concert violinist as a part time job while finishing high school.

"I'm going to school now!" I called.

Rafe came over and kissed my cheek. He smiled sweetly at me and I smiled back and hugged him.

"I may be late coming home from work but I should be home by five," he said.

"Okay, no problem. I'll have dinner ready most likely at six, so it's all good."

He smiled. "Great! Have a good day."

"You too," I said and I left.

I took a deep breath as I walked to school. I suddenly felt queasy and felt like I was going to throw up.

"Ugh... damn it!" I shouted. I quickly ran to the general store down the street. I ran as fast as I could. I barged in through the door.

"Mrs.Cartier!" said the clerk.

"Corin! Wash rooms?!"

He pointed to the back of the store and I ran there just making it on time. I lifted my head from the toilet bowl and flushed it. I looked in the mirror while washing my hands before I did again.

"D-damn it... Why do I feel like..." I paused. My period... when was the last time I... had my period?! I quickly flushed again and ran out into the general store and grabbed a "certain something" off the racks throwing a twenty onto the counter for Corin.

A few minutes later...

"Positive... It's positive..." I whispered placing a hand on my forehead. "Damn it... it's positive..." Tears began to trickle down my cheek.

"Is everything all right?" asked Corin as I came out of the washroom.

I wiped my tears away and nodded. "Thank you..." I said quietly.

I walked back to the apartment. I walked up the flight if stairs and opened the front door just as Rafe was leaving.

"Katherine?! What the?! Are you alright... you're so pale!"

"Rafe..."

He looked at me with worry in his eyes. "Yes?"

"Rafe... I'm... I'm pregnant..."
