When Isaac said, "Kira, I'll keep you safe." The line, "You'll be safe and sound" played in my head. BUMP!
------- "Sunshine? Wake up.." He shook me slightly, and I could feel him smiling down on me. "Stop that." I rolled my eyes, even though they were shut tight. "Stop what?" Issac innocently laughed. I pounced upon him and laughed halfheatedly, "That!" "Oh this?" He smiled wide, and I felt warm inside, despite all the ugly truths I had witnessed yesterday. "Shush it." I gnarled my teeth at him. "Shush!" He mocked, laughingly. I smiled into his eyes, and he smiled back. I could feel a blush rising in me, and I knew I couldnt stop it. "Get down!!!l" Issac pushed me to the forest floor. "Wh-" "SHHH!" I looked up and from below my small hiding space, I saw two men walking away from a tree, where they collected a few berries and walked away with thuer guns laughing. "Close one, Loud mouth." Issac chuckled. "You pushed me down pretty hard. I think my arm is broken." I wobbled my arm in a silly fashion and pushed him with my 'good arm'. "If a broken arm keeps you alive, I'll live with it." He winked, but I knew he was serious. "Can I ask you something?" I bit my lip. "Yes?" "Why are you so protective over me?" "I- Well." He struggled, then stopped walking. I looked behind me and saw that he was walking extremely close to me. "Kira.. I-" Issac looked at me, then grasped his fingers around the back of my neck. It gave me chills. He leaned into my face, closer and closer. I was prepared for anything. Instead of meeting my lips, his lips grazed my ear as he slyly said, "Its a secret." ----------
-PRESENT TIME- As I sit here and think of that day, it breaks my heart. I can't even begin to understand the irony, nor erase the ugly memories of that day.. March 5, 1945. ------- Issac and I had been settled for almost three years. We had hidden ourselves in the refuge of a Priests home. We lived mostly in his attic, because he let Nazi Soldiers stay over for nightly dinner that his wife cooked. It was a warm night, the stars were shining brighter than I had seen since the beggining of Spring. Issac and I lay on a creaky, full size bed together, talking. "You think it'll end soon?" I whispered, but he was already asleep. His arm was wrapped protectively around me, and I smiled in vain, thinking I could actually be safe with him. There was the steady breathing of his that tickled my ears. He was all I was focused on. All I cared about. This man, had kept me safe. I was okay in his arms. He was so good to me, he had saved my life too many a time, and even bought me a beautiful dress for my fifteenth birthday. I believed I could possibly love him, but I knew he couldn't feel the same. I was falling asleep, loosing myself in his arms. A scream from Pastor Eziekel, a loud crashing, and yelling of voices. I jolted awake. "What was that?" I heard him sit up and I shushed him. " It must be soldiers." I began shivering in fear. "Kira, listen to me. We'll be okay. I'm here." Issac held me closer, and I grabbed him. "What if-" "If we must split up, meet me here, whenever you can come back safely." He whispered that soothingly into my ear, but I only felt more fear.. I felt his fear. Footsteps. I heard them instantly. The door slammed open. "WHERE ARE YOU, JUDES?" A soldier screamed as he kicked down the door. I screamed and pulled Issac behind me. "IM A JEW!! LEAVE HIM! HE IS OF THE GERMAN RELIGION! PLEASE TAKE ME!" I sprung forward to my knees and began speaking a Jewish prayer. "Sieze her!!! And the boy!" He yelled as others marched in. "ISSAC!!"I screamed as I was pulled say from him. "KIRA!!" He began fighting several soldiers, trying to reach me. "Get down Jude lover!!!!" One soldier began beating Issac with the butt of his rifle, but when Issac persisted, a Nazi raised his gun and pointed it readily at Issacs head. I was pulled out of the room. Everything was slowed, amplified even. The gun being loaded. Issac screaming for me. The loud shutter of the shotgun. The thud as he hit the floor. I couldn't protect him. After all the times he's kept me safe and sound, I couldn't even save him. ------- I remember the tears streaming down your face When I said "I'll never let you go" When all those shadows almost killed your light I remember you said "Dont leave me here alone" But all that's dead and gone and passed tonight. Just close your eyes, The sun is goin down You'll be alright No one can hurt you now Come morning light You and I'll be safe and sound. Don't you dare look out your window darling Everything's on fire The war outside our door keeps raging on Hold on to this lullaby Even when the musics gone Gone. -PRESENT TIME- As I sit here and think of that day, it breaks my heart.
