Alex? Out of every guy here, why Alex? He wouldn't want to help us at all! He already thought I killed Alice. If he gets any proof at all, he'll have me put in Solitary Treatment forever.
    It was too risky.
I tried to explain that to Daphne, but she shook her head, cutting me off mid-sentence.
    "We have no choice."
    "We have plenty of choices"-
"All the other helpers are completely loyal to Hathoway. We won't even be alive if we told them anything. Alex is different."
    "What do you mean...?"
"When Alice was alive, Alex requested that Dr. Hathoway made her a helper. And she did. They both ruled this place, and actually did a pretty good job. But one day, Alice changed. She would randomly walk up to people in the halls and beat them until they cried for mercy. Alex was the opposite. He tried to keep her at bay, but she was power-crazy."
    "..."
I sighed, standing up. It was clear I truly had no choice. She was right. Alex seemed at least a little bit trustworthy. I hoped he would forgive me for attacking his girlfriend. I'm not so sure if he'd forgive me for killing her.
Daphne opened the door for me, gesturing into the hall. I walked out, and she followed, moving to close the door behind herself. It was actually silent the way she did it, it took her a few tries to get it right. I stood there, my arms crossed, waiting for her.
    "Daphne...?"
"Yes!" she exclaimed, the door finally closed.
    "What was that all about?"
    "Oh... sorry. OCD."
    "No kidding."
She pouted, and stepped into the doorway of the recreational room, nodding inside.
"Alex's in there. You should talk to him yourself."
    "What? Why...?!"
"Because I think he'd trust you more."
"Of course you do..." I muttered, exhaling sharply as I walked into the room.
There Alex was, reading a book. I approached him, coughing lightly to get his attention. He looked up, a surprised look on his face.
    "Rose...?"
    "Can I talk to you...?"

  9. "Yeah?" he asked, setting the book down. I crossed my arms, and felt an annoyed look seep into my expression. I really didn't want to do this. He arched an eyebrow, waiting for me to speak.
"Not here! You know, alone?" I said sharply.
"...why do you need to speak with me alone?" he mused, a mischievous smile playing at his lips.
"Oh shut up!" I snapped, spinning on my heel and marching out of the room. I was surprised to hear the sound of his footsteps following me. I headed down the stairs, towards the bathrooms.
    "Rose...?"
"Just leave me alone!" I hissed, storming into the bathroom. I was frustrated, really. Alex pissed me off to no end.
Suddenly, his hand encircled my wrist, and we were both inside the bathroom. I glared at his hand, gritting my teeth.
    "I said, leave me alone!"
I brought my free fist sharply into his jaw, and he swiftly lifted his chin, my punch missing him completely. Alex grabbed my passing hand, and twisted me around, pinning me against the wall. He had his hands holding mine directly by my face. I couldn't move unless he allowed it, which he wouldn't.
"What. Are. You. Doing?" he said sternly.
"I should ask you the same." I retorted, giving him the coldest look I could muster. "You didn't have to restrain me like this."
"...you're right. But I did it anyways." he smirked, his expression turning thoughtful. "What did you want to talk about?"
"You're one of Hathoway's helpers, right?"
    "Yeah."
    "I need your help."
He made a face, arching an eyebrow.
    "Help with what?"
    "Hathoway. She"-
I bit my lip, struggling to hold back tears. Dammit... Dr. Hathoway's so-called "treatments" were so bad, just talking about them made me... scared...
Alex's features were struck with a look of worry for a moment, and he searched my eyes with his own. "She... she sent you to Solitary Treatment?" he whispered.
    "Yes…"
And right there, in front of Alex, I started to cry. I was silent, but plenty of emotion was behind each damned teardrop I shed.
    "I-I'm sorry..." I stuttered.
"I am too..." he murmured, leaning closer. "Just be glad she doesn't have cameras in here."
Before I could respond, he leaned even closer...

    ...and kissed me.
