  5. I was both excited and not excited for spending the day with Mr.Quinn. A sheepish grin was spread across my face when I looked up into the mirror again.

"What is with that smile?!" I barked at myself. I quickly looked away and went downstairs to the living room.

    "Finally you're ready," he said.

I raised an eyebrow. He looked clean. He was dressed normally and his hair was unkept but it didn't look awful. He did wear his black reading glasses which he normally wore while teaching.

He looked me over. "Is that what you're wearing?" he asked.

I nodded. "It's the only thing I have right now. Remember.. I was at my job last night?"

    He scoffed. "Your job..."

"Yes, my job," I replied. I suddenly felt flustered and I wanted to leave. Maybe going to school would be fine... but dressed the way I was... not a chance.

"You need new clothes," he said and he sighed.

"Where am I going to get new clothes? Are we going shopping?" I asked. "I have no money..."

"No. Here, come with me," he said.

I followed him into the spare bedroom upstairs. He opened the closet to reveal many female outfits.

I smirked. "Have a fetish?" I asked. "Why do you have female clothing in your spare bedroom?"

"Haha. Funny. No... My sister visits regularly. This is her bedroom. She's a size four... you?" he asked.

    I blushed. "I-I really don't know..."

He looked me over. "I'd say you are the same size as Anne," he said and he tossed me a plaid sleeveless dress.

I examined it. It was hideous... maybe it'd look better on me than it did on the hanger...

"You're taking to long!" he shouted from outside the washroom door. "Just come out already," he said.

I felt awkward.. But it would have to make do. I opened the door slowly and stepped out. "Does it look okay?" I asked. "Because to me it seems..."

He laughed and I froze. Was he laughing at me.

"I knew it! It looks terrible!" I said and I turned to go back and change but he stopped me with his arm and turned me around to face him.

"No. That's not what I meant by the laugh. I was laughing because you were so worried you wouldn't look good in it. Wouldn't anything be fine to where, instead of what you were wearing previously?"

    "Y-yeah..."

"To be honest, it looks lovely on you. It makes you look more grown up," he said.

    "Haha. As if," I said.

He handed me a sun hat. It had the same beige color as my dress. "It makes me look old," I said frowning.

"No it doesn't Jane. It makes you look like a lady," he said.

    I blushed. "B-but I am a lady!" I protested.

He laughed. "Come on, let's just go out," he said and he walked towards the front door. "Where do you want to go? We can go for lunch."

    I nodded. "Yeah, I'm starving!"

"Okay, lunch it is," he said.

Lunch was pleasant but awkward. I didn't know how to make nice conversation, so I spent my time looking around the restaurant and out the window. I was avoiding eye contact.

After lunch we decided to go for a walk in the park. It felt weird walking beside him... a foot away. I occasionally looked at him and he seemed perfectly fine, so I did nothing.

He cleared his throat and I felt my heart jump. Maybe I should say something. Perhaps it'd clear the awkwardness. But what could I say?

As we kept on walking in silence I noticed something. Many of the people walked in pairs. Ninety percent being couples. Their arms linked and they walked in step with one another. I felt my cheeks flush as I looked at my strides and Mr.Quinn's. They were totally out of sync. As I tried to get them in step, I failed to realize that he was watching.

"What are you doing?" he asked.

I blushed madly. "Hahaha! Nothing nothing!" I said in a nervous laugh.

A smirk spread across his lips. "Did you want to walk in sync or something?" he asked. He chuckled as my face explained it all.

    "N-no!"

He finally took notice of all the couples, and his eyes found their way back to me. He smiled at me briefly and extended his arm out to me.

"What are you doing?" I asked.

"I see now... What you were taking notice of. If you don't want to that's fine," he said and he began to pull his arm away.

"Um.. it's..." I began. "It's fine!" I said and I took his arm.

As we were walking I laughed to myself. I had taken notice that we were now walking in step.

There was a couple up ahead. The woman seemed to want to hold hands with her boyfriend, who walked with his hands in his pockets.

"Please Mike," she said. "Look how cosy that couple is," she whined as she pointed towards us.

    Cosy...? My face flushed.

"Are you kidding? They don't look comfortable at all. It's like they're teacher and student or brother and sister," he said.

I felt mildly embarrassed and I squirmed a bit.

    "Calm down..." whispered Mr.Quinn.

"Calm down?! What if someone notices?! I-I don't..."

His hand trailed down to mine and he interlocked our fingers. "Just play cool and no one will notice," he said and he glanced around.

"O-okay," I said and I looked at him.

    "What?" he asked.

    "Nothing..." I whispered.

He smiled. "You sure are the strangest girl I've ever met," he laughed. "I wonder why you never stuck out in my class," he said and he laughed. "Odd."

I laughed too. This day hadn't gone quite as bad as I thought. It wasn't peaceful... but it wasn't full of craziness as I had mentally imaged. It was almost... okay.
