There's a big difference between anime and cartoons. While anime is short for animation, anime is usually intended for teenage or adult audiences. It's not just about culture and region, because there's also American anime. Anime also, has a different style and theme than cartoons. While there's typically a lesson for kids to learn in cartoons, in anime there's a lot of more grown up situations

See the thing is technically both are animation and you can't really deny that anime isn't cartoon or vice versa theoretically. But generally what happens is cartoons are episodic in nature. While anime are like a series that builds up to a certain scenario with a particular theme. But with dc and marvel having a humongous amount of comics in america they have stories and cartoons like justice league that builds upto a certain point just like anime does. They are even making a batman ninja series that is now being called an anime. So why is this the first batman series being regarded as anime and not cartoon. See the 2d and usually hand drawn style of anime costs more than 2 million dollars for about 13 episodes. While cartoons have more cgi,vector and computer graphics. So welp they are same theoretically but we have categorised them differently based on how the generally are. If you go reddit and read the most useful answer Google gives. Welp anime= cartoon. If you search deeper and go YouTube. See the cost of both the things the amount of efforts and what they are looking up for is different. Anime is also most likely based up on a manga or a light novel to hype that up. Cartoon on the other hand can be backed up by a comic for marvel and dc only usually or being there on it's own promoting merchandise for kids. So welp one is a huge open platform Other competes it solely based on two companies and rest is usual goofy and is for kids. In the end there's no point arguing over this. If you think too technically you can't find a difference. If you look at it economically and what they are made for and are actually promoting you maybe will find a difference.
