Laverne slept fitfully, tossing and turning in the soft duvet, unable to escape from the torturous grips of nightmares. She felt like trapped in the centre of strong burning flames. She saw the beautiful girl in the arms of Greg, and the couple laughed away at some private jokes. The flames consumed her as she watched him meet her eyes, and lower down to kiss the girl in his arms.

“No, Greg, no!” Laverne yelled, grabbing a fistful of duvet beneath her. Beads of perspiration formed above her brows, and tears streamed down her face. “Don’t leave me alone!”

“Hush, you are fine.” A masculine voice interrupted. A cool damp cloth was laid over her forehead, and Laverne felt the flames diminishing a little. She felt herself being pulled out of the flames by a strong hand. The fingers are loosening her grip on the duvet, holding her small cold hand in the warm palm. “Open your eyes, and look at me. You are not alone.”

Frowning, Laverne tried opening her eyes, and squinted at the faint shadows in front of her. There were several people. She shook her head to clear the fuzz, and winced at the pounding in her head.

Zach came into her view, gradually. He cupped her face between an open palm, and helped her up into a sitting position, with a hand beneath her nape. Laverne, tried to speak, and a hoarse voice whimpered through her dry and sore throat. A cup was placed at her lips, and she sipped the sweet honey lemon drink, letting the cool liquid slip down the burning throat.

“What happened? Where am I? Why am I here?” She mumbled, gathering sheets around her. She flustered about, attempting to get off the bed. She fell off the bed in a heap, and burst out into tears. “What’s wrong with me? I have never been this feeble.”

Zach lifted her back up onto the bed, and tucked her in. Bemusedly, he said, “Well, you have been running high fever for a good three days. Greg, your traitorous boyfriend has since left with Jolyn.”

It all came back to her. The sweet memories, never forgotten, were now laced with dark sadness. She watched her tears fall onto her hand, and recalled the day when they shared a jacket in the cold chill.

“I am not certain why I am keeping you here, girl. Stop crying before I kick you out of my house.” Zach interrupted her thoughts.

“Brother,” Andi said, pushing a bowl of porridge before Laverne. “Get out of my way, and let the poor dear get some food.”

She settled down beside Zach, and lifted a spoonful before Laverne. Laverne turned away, uninterested.

“You know what? I think you should finish every drop of this food, get your energy back, and recover as fast as you could. Only then you will be able to find the revenge you need.” Andi lamented.

Laverne shut her eyes, and pretended to sleep.

“Fine. I am out of here.” Andi placed the porridge by her bedside, and stormed out of the room. Zach shook his head and left subsequently, leaving Laverne to howl and wail.

Finally spent, she slid open the door, and walked out to the balcony. She climbed over the ledge, and leapt off.

Joel stood at the foot of the bed, arms folded, and pouted. “What are we going to do now Greg? You said you would bring me far away and buy a new house for us.”

Greg frowned, deep in faraway thoughts, paid no heeds to the sulking girl. He grunted and glared at Joel when she kicked him on his shin. “What the ..?”

“That woman is history. Do you understand that? H-I-S-T-O-R-Y!! You said love with her was BLAND. Come on. Don’t tell me you miss that woman.”

He grabbed her tightly on her arms, and shook her fiercely. “Don’t you dare speak of her in this manner! She is forever my angel.” He let go of her and threw her onto the bed. “And this is where you belong.”

Shaking in fury, Zach paced the corridor outside Laverne’s room. Laverne’s room, he kind of liked the sound of it. She now belonged to him. But for no sense he could think of, he could not quite comprehend the reason for his obsession of this girl.

He first saw her on the beach, seated on a large rock with Greg, sharing a coat, and whispering sweet nothings under the starry sky. He himself had another girl with him, but he couldn’t help eyeing Laverne from afar. Her sweet smile, lit up her face, and made the shining stars seem pale in comparison. From time to time, her head will dip shyly, as Greg whispered into her ear.

Zach liked the pearl ear-studs she wore on each of her ear, that night. That was the way he remembered her as, simple and adorable.

He drove past a cafeteria some couple of weeks ago, and saw her again, chatting away happily with a girl friend, over a cup of pink drink. That sugary stuff that girls loved, he could not understand. But there was her, a more casual and at-ease self, decked in a simple white top with lace details, brushing a piece of hair away from her face, and tucking it neatly behind her ear. This time, he saw a simple heart-shaped diamante stud. He recognized her by her smile, the same that seemed to light up his heart.

When Bull, the guys all call him that, not just for his size, but more for his temper, came stomping through his hallway one day, Zach brushed him aside. It wasn’t the first time a girl left him for another. Yet when Andi dragged him to the court, where Bull had taken Greg to, Zach regretted not getting there earlier. There was his angel, on the floor, beneath Bull.

Zach punched the wall, cursing under his breath. Bull scared her. And above all, that bastard broke her heart.

He hated himself, for not coming in earlier, and for not watching her. Having found her in a crumpled mess at the front porch was not something he wanted to see.

“That old man is certainly taking a long time examining her. Is he done or not?” he bellowed.

Just in time, the doctor came out of her room, the nurse following behind with a tray full of blood-soaked cotton wads.

“She’s weak now, but she will get better. Don’t let her get up, she dislocated her shoulder and hips. She will be in terrible pain, give her a shot if she needs it.” The doctor ranted, and prepared some needles and morphine shots.

Zach paid little attention to him, upon the assurance of “getting better”, he rushed into the room, and sat beside Laverne, watching her chest rise and fall steadily with each breath.
