"I had fun." Kyle said when he drove me home. "I—" I couldn't tell him that I liked him. It was fake. I had to play along. "Me too." I forced a smile. He led me the door, and I waited for a kiss. No such luck. He seemed bothered, but smiled, and left. I watched his motorcycle disappear. "So...?" Kate said, jumping out of nowhere, "How'd it go?" I shrugged. "Okay, I guess." "Okay?!" Kate's face fell. "The first date has to be the best! What went wrong?" I couldn't tell her. "He didn't give me a kiss at the end of the date," I lied. Sure, that was pretty bad, but that hadn't brought my hopes down. "Oh," Kate sighed, "I'll talk to him." "No. I want him to do it by himself. See if he's romantic or not..." I hesitated. "Did you really tell him to jump into the pond?" "What?" Kate's eyes bulged. "He did that?" I laughed. Maybe he could be romantic on his own. • • • On Monday morning, I felt like I could sleep forever. But, of course, my parents had to wake me up. When I got to school, I saw a bunch of girls crowded around someone. "Yes, he's my boyfriend!" Cassandra yelled. I came for a closer look and saw a hot, shirtless guy posing. "Hey." He said to some girls. They almost fainted. Sure he was hot, but he was "surfer hot". Kyle was..."biker hot". Ring! Ring! The bell rang, signaling class had begun. "Okay, shoo shoo!" Cassandra said to the crowd of girls. "Go ahead. Leave." I hid behind a nearby tree. Cassandra looked around. "Okay, nobody's watching. Here's your money, Luke." He flashed her a smile. "I'll be at the party." "Yeah, whatever. I need to break up with my boyfriend." Luke went in for a kiss. "Ew, stop it, shark bait." Cassandra said, putting her hand in front of his face. "You're my fake boyfriend. I'll see if I like you, though." Luke's face fell. Wow. I felt so sorry for Luke. I came out of my hiding spot and stepped towards the school. Immediately, Cassandra grabbed Luke and started to make out with him. "Yoohoo!" Cassandra yelled at me, "I'm bringing Luke. Isn't he hot?!" She said, tracing his six-pack. "Yeah." Bzzz. Bzzzz. I picked up my phone. "What, Kate?" This was probably the fifteenth time she called me. "I'll be going to the mall tomorrow, okay?" "Um, yeah," I heard Kyle say awkwardly. "Oh! I am so sorry, Kyle!" I was such an idiot. "Yeah, it's okay," He chuckled, "My cousin can be pretty annoying." I laughed. "So what's up?"
