  1. As I lay in my bed under the low, pointed ceiling and 70's chandelier with feathers and beads, I thought of how Claire had been attacked by her boyfriend. Her boyfriend... she didn't have one! Was it... Jason? But WHY?

Then I smiled secretly, kicking around in the thick downy comforter. I had Sophie. Sweet, helpful, gentle little Sophie. I wanted to call her the typical popular girl, but she was more than that and I knew it. She had a glowing, caring soul... a soul that had sensed my boring, crying, not nearly as good soul and comforted it. I felt a pang on guilt. Maybe I shouldn't be using her like this... it felt a bit wrong to take advantage of such a nice person.

But Azalea! Heaps of fun, goofy Azalea. The first time we met was in 3rd grade; she was my friend Veronica's younger sister. I first encountered her prancing around Veronica's family room in a halfway peeled off swimming suit, laughing and throwing ground up "confetti" (strips of construction paper and the emptied contents of a pencil sharpener that she'd put some colored pencils in) at us before we escaped upstairs.

She was less insane now, but still very silly. She also sort of stalked Claire, her heart set on befriending her and warm-hearted Brayleigh- even though they were juniors and she barely a freshman. Brayleigh took her under her caring wing, but Claire quickly shooed her away as nicely as she could. But Azalea never gave up.

Azalea had met Jason, and since they were inseparable- at least, it seemed like that. She didn't deserve to be cheated on! No one did!

So I was helping her, right! I was making this world a better place... right?

  11. In the morning, I slipped on a red

  12. NOOOOOOO! OMG I WORKED SO HARD ON IT AND IT'S GONE!!!!

  13. The next morning, I slipped on a red and white floral sun dress, white wedge heel sandals, and an eyelet crochet mini sweater. Normally, I would NEVER wear any of this stuff, but today I could use a little fashion for people to like me better.

I flash down the hall, chug down a glass of slightly curdled milk and scarf down an energy bar before I ripped off a post-it sticky notes and scribbled down a note:

Had breakfast early and walked to school. I have my Sidekick, so you can call me if you need anything.
    -Abby
    P.S. Replace the milk.

I grabbed my backpack, zoomed out the door, and noticed a couple other kids walking to school, too.

My eye caught a short girl wearing a Japanese graphic T-shirt, purple leggings, and black Uggs. I know her, I think! I race up to her and struggle to follow her long strides.

"Hey," I pant."My name is Abby? I think we know eachother."

    I reckonize her deep, chocolatey voice."Uh, I don't think so. "

I frown. "No, no, your Joyce Mallory! I know you, we were lab partners a couple semesters ago."

She nods and keeps going, a bit faster. I sigh and cross to the other side of the street, where I trot in peace.

When I get to Washington High, I quickly hid my heart-shaped face behind my blonde hair and rushed to find Sophie Summers.

There she is! Well, it's not to hard to find her. Just look for a laughing ball of goodness inside a crowd of adorers, right beside Claire and all the other popular girls.

She smiles happily when she spots me and pushes through the crowd to link arms with me.

"Hi, Abby!" she giggles. "How's it going?"

I plaster on a fake smile. Believe it or not, despite my mostly drab appearance, I have a million dollar, brilliant smile. She practically jumps back at the huge grin I manage.

"I'm great, Soph!" I beam. "What's going on with you?"

She shrugs."It's okay. I feel really guilty, though, because I totally forgot to bring bread to the homeless shelter! I only brought milk and cheese and meat."

It takes me a moment to process that Sophie's being serious."Oh, it's okay! At least you brought something, right?"

  15. Neither.
