  1. I guess that's fair.

Would that make incest be a "moral wrong" not because it is, but because by teaching people that it is one, we are discouraging it and thereby preventing its bad side effects?

  2. I have a habit of questioning things, it's not that deep.

  3. Can you consider it as a mental illness? ?

  4. It's immoral because its practice is damaging to society.

We currently discourage people from doing it to prevent the issues that it causes... Which it definitely does cause.

You might not see the issues in examination of a particular case, but across society there are bad cases and the issues become clearer when examined from a social rather than a 1 on 1 scale.

  5. Possibly? It depends on how you'd define a mental illness. I personally don't think that any condition that doesn't pose a threat to one's health and life can be considered an illness, but it is definitely not a "normal" mental state to be in.

There was a research somewhere which concluded that most people just do not wish to engage in sexual activities with those that they have spent their life growing with, but I don't know how accurate that research or conclusion is.

  6.
  7. There are lots of practices that might damage society too. Technology is causing knowledge loss, some might argue that gaming and the addiction it creates damages society. Are they all immoral? :c Is everything we do just immoral?

  8. The holiest man in the bible sleepy with his daughters.

I'm just going to leave this here.

  9. Wat.

    ...

    Is it Jesus?

  10. A lot of ppl in the bible slept or even married their cousin/sibling

    Yikes

  11. A recipe is technology. need to be more specific.

Certain elements of game design are regulated. e.g. lootboxes

the addictiveness of a game is tied to its entertainment and how well it substitutes/provides us with things we need like social interaction, skill mastery, and purpose.

The absence of these things in wider society is a bigger issue than games providing those things :)

  12. My thoughts pretty much are the same as Kefo's on this one.

  13. A recipe? Like a cooking recipe?

I can't argue with the gaming bit, it's sound logic. If everything that damages society considered immoral, does something stop becoming immoral once it becomes a benefit?

  14. Technology is just stuff we make. Recipes, processes, hats, the wheel, etc. are all technology.

Things aren't black and white like that
..like there are times when murder is considered okay. A last resort for self defence, to prevent someone from slaughtering many people, if they nroke your PS4, etc.

Incest ain't ever gonna be good for society unless we're talking about the development of good ideas and/or good genes within a house. But that's all luck of the draw.

That was what royal houses were going for... The idea is that their genes are good. They're in power. Top dog. Alphas. And their genes must have helped... So keep on inbreeding and you amplify the good parts while keeping the bad parts out...

But I guess from a metaphysical perspective, the realm of what's good.. And what suits our specific needs is narrower than the realm that ain't that good or which is useless. So it was these aspects of the people which weren't noticed/paid mind which were most often amplified and became messed up.

  15. Is a murder which "benefits" society still considered immoral?

I think that definition of morality just doesn't sit very well with me, simply because morality imo is more towards being humane vs. not, and not beneficial vs. unbeneficial. To judge morals based on benefits isn't very humane.

However, it's a very logical definition, which is why I can't dispute it. It just disturbs me.

Also, after dinner, I suddenly wanted to ask another question: While teacher student relationships are frowned upon, are they "immoral" if both are adults when they met?

  16. lol literally what

  17. People who don’t question everything in life are the reasons these topics are so avoided. We’re taught this subject is wrong but never why, taught that intercourse with other species and young ages is wrong, etc. but never why. i am def not saying they aren’t wrong in different ways tho cuz eww instead it’s just “this is how the world works and you will follow the rules without question”

Long ago and still kinda today this is/was seen as perfectly normal and very much accepted for the most part... until it was questioned.. but if you question why and try to have an open conversation about it people shy away for fear that they’ll be viewed as accepting it or they just honestly don’t know why, other than the deformities and diseases it may cause etc.

So imo parents should never just say “this thing is bad don’t do it” they should inform children of what makes it bad and why not to do it. This short thread shows exactly what dumb responses will happen if not. Otherwise life goes on where we just accept things, which causes its own large list of issues.

  18. There's something called the Wackerman effect, which is the idea that humans seem to become s.exually disinterested in those with who they spend most of their childhood with. Actually, a study was done to support this (although it was more of a psuedo-experiment since it cant exactly be "controlled"). The Israeli Kibbutz had children that were predominantly raised in similarly-aged mixed gender groups. Of the 3k children examined and observed, 14 cases of marriage happened, and of the 14 cases, all of them were between people introduced to the group after the age of 6.

So, incest isn't technically unethical. It only becomes unethical there is harm being done to another party. I guess a more accurate term would be that incest is a taboo in society. Personal disgust or religion only explains why an individual wouldn't want to engage in it.

What's interesting about all of this is that even older societies recognized that incestry was "bad". I feel like our lack of wanting to be with a blood relative also shows our instincts to want to pass the best genes. Besides the fact that it causes birth defects, genetic variability is also at risk. As such, we're likely to be attracted to someone who isnt related to us

  19. Most of the incest I see or am aware of tends to involve children being manipulated by an adult they trust. If the incest is between two consulting adults, I think they are gross and am concerned for their potential offspring but I don't think it is inherently morally wrong, I guess.
