"So," Zephy said excitedly, rubbing her palms together. "Where are we going?"

"...Why aren't you more concerned about the fact that you're dead?" To Jake, that was odd. She was dead. DEAD. That should matter more. Right? Right.

"Ummm...I was at first. You know, with the whole fainting thing. But now...I just don't care. I can't change it so why worry about it?"

"Oh. Okay. I guess." How could she be so flippant about it? Her dead body was just a few yards away. How could she not care?

"Now let's get on with this! Where are we headed?"

She was so dang chipper. Talk this, talk that, happy, happy, oh, look! I'm acting!, happy, he thought as he turned and walked away. How? More importantly...why?!

"Soo...where are we going? Are you going home? I'd ask if I was going home but I'm already home so we obviously aren't going there," she kept him updated on her mental thoughts with running commentary. "Where? Are we going on a trip? Will it be fun? It should be! Absolutely amazing! Can we sneak in a water park? No one will see us and it'll be AWE-some!"

Damn...so enthusiastic. Absently, he made a left, close to Christi's house. Why was she so chipper?

"And then, instead of waiting in line for the water slide, we can cut line and get to the front! We're gonna bs rebels!" Zephy exclaimed, rather pleased with her plans.

    "No," Jake replied exasperatedly.

"...No? What?" Confused, she looked at him expectantly, waiting for him to explain. "Why not?"

"Because," he sighed "I have something to do. You can go to the water slide or whatever. Go. Have fun. Bye."

"But...but...but...no! You said I could come with you and I am."

    "You don't have to...."

    "I am."

"But you can go have fun...."

"I said I was coming with you and I am," she said, resolved and obviously not taking no for an answer. "Now where are we going?"

"Well...ummm...we're going to...a friends house and..." he stalled, trying to come up with a feasible reason to give her as to why they were going to "a friends house" but having no luck.

"...You're a terrible liar. I don't even know you and I can still tell you're lying. Now tell the truth. Truth," she told him, studying him intently.

"Well...my friend and I made each other a promise that if either one of us died we would visit each other! And so I'm going to go visit...her," Jake said off the top of his head. There. A perfect reason and a perfect lie.

...but then again, apparently not. "...You're lying again."

"What? I am not!" Dang it. She was on to him with a capital I-SEE-WHAT-YOU'RE-DOING. Damn.

"Yes you are. And you're doing it again."

"Oh, please." Defensively, he challenged her. "How would you know?!"

"Every time you lie, you tilt your head to the side. Usually the left side. Just a little bit. If you weren't standing so close to me, I wouldn't notice." This chick...she amazed him all the time. And right now...she had his name and his number.

"Now tell me the truth." She watched him stare at her, then smiled sweetly at him. "Please?"

Ugh...he had to tell. She just wouldn't shut up. He obviously couldn't control her mind. No matter how badly he wanted to so he could make her shut up. Maybe if he told her she would shut up. Probably not but it was a possibility. And, he admitted to himself, he was tired of being alone and not talking to anyone. What could this hurt?

He sat down, waving her down beside him. When she sat, he said "Well...you see...there was this girl..." and began recounting his death. His terrible day at school, Christi's rejection, his slightly painful death, and his purpose in death.

The entire time he talked, she listened intently. She never interrupted, never once laughed. And when he was done, she sat there. Sat there and thought about what he had said. And when she finished, she looked at him. "What revenge do you plan on getting?"

...Well that wasn't what he had been expecting. "Erm...I haven't figured it out yet. But I'll get there. I was planning on figuring that out. After I--we," he corrected himself, "got there."

"You need to come up with a plan first. But...why revenge?"

"What? I just told you why!"

"No, I know that," she told him, rolling her eyes. "I was listening, you know. But I just meant...how to say it? Ummm..." she paused, trying to come up with appropriate words. "Why revenge? Why not just get even?"

    "...What?" He was lost.

"Okay. Let's see...whats your definition of revenge?"

"...Getting back at someone? Who doesn't know that?! And what's the difference between getting revenge and getting even? They're the same!" Really. That, to him, was an obvious thing. But not to her, he guessed.

"Exactly! Generally, when you get revenge, you stop when you do to them what they've done to you!" He looked at her expectantly, waiting for her to expand. "Like...if someone trips you someday, to get revenge you would trip them and that would be the end of it. Revenge is usually quick and simple. But," she continued, warming to the topic, "you can't do that. Well, I mean, you could but it wouldn't be useful. What's she gonna do? Ask you out so you can reject her and get revenge? No. It just doesn't make sense. BUT getting even is much different."

She paused again and looked at him. He waited on her to explain until he realized that she was waiting oh him to say something. "...How is it different?"

Zephy smiled at him, glad he was at least interested in what she was saying. "Okay. Like I said, revenge is short, sweet, and to the point. But getting even...it's...better. If you have the patience for it. It's like...you get back at someone--get revenge, if you still want to call it revenge--until you feel like you're even. As long as they don't die because of something you do to them, it's still considered getting even and it can last for as long as you want. If they die it's just revenge. Understand?"

"Sort of," Jake replied. "Mostly, actually. But...how to do it?" He honestly couldn't come up with any ideas. But...the whole "getting even" idea was hers. Maybe she could help.

"Oh, I can definitely help you there." Her eyes lit up, becoming as bright as a lighthouse as she explained her idea. "We are ghosts, after all. Sound good?"

"It. Sounds. Amazing. She'll never know what hit her."

"Great," she said, smiling deviously at him. "Time for you to get even."
