Agreed. Debate is not argument. Although, as a basic logic course will teach you, debate involve arguments.
In most cases selfishness is antithetical to morality. Morality often involves putting the wellbeing of others in society before your own. We probably wouldn't have morality if we didn't live in a society.
You need to define the "morality" you are referring to. The Objectivist moral code says selfishness is the highest virtue. And if morality is universal (Lewis' The Tao), then a universal, objective, singular, true morality has always and will always exist, even outside of society.
Naw. It's just wise to not waste your life on something non beneficial to yourself nor your loved ones. Not only that, but human nature is typically a cruel thing. They wouldn't gaf about me. They don't know me. It's only stupid to you, because you give your trust to people who don't gaf about you. You're used to it.
ah I see, but it would be based on an underlying belief that we can live in a society where this notion of "rational selfishness" can lead to a more cohesive and positive society. With the "rationality" over ruling the negative implications to the lives of other that can often come with selfishness.
Me: I won't do something to help others because they probably wouldn't do the same for me Others: We won't do something to help him/her because he/she wouldn't do the same for me The world is doomed
What if I told you it was only the extent of your knowledge of the implications of your actions that makes certain things seem selfish or selfless, and that more things are selfish than you know?
What does this have to do with trust? I thought we were talking about helping people. You do not need to trust someone to help someone...
For Objectivism, they would be agnostic on cohesiveness because they think individuals are greater than a society. One of the Objectivist heroes blows up a housing project to house poor people because it conflicts with his vision.
What does this have to do with trust? I thought we were talking about helping people. You do not need to trust someone to help someone...[/quote] The point is you're used to caring about people who don't care about you, I'm not. Our opinion on this topic will differ based on our individual nurture and nature.
May as well just go all the way back, like way way back and have god remove that little thing he gave all of us called free will. If you believe in all that?
