  4. James reacted with lightning speed, scrambling across the floor to grab for the gun. The man moved at the same time, lunging for James. With a grunt, James felt the impact of the man's weight as he slid across the floor. His fingertips had brushed briefly against the gun but frustratingly his hands could not get a hold of it from his position.

The man on top of him punched him in the gut, and James felt the wind rush from his lungs. He retaliated with a left hook across the man's gaping jaw and twisted away to reach for the gun once more. His fingers made contact with the slide, but again he could not get a hold on the smooth plastic. He felt arms gripping at his shoulders and reached up just in time to push the man back, away from his neck.

His thoughts flickered back to earlier that day when Mr Ford had attacked him. Was this related? If it came to a power struggle, he was no match for the large hulking man on top of him, especially in his wounded state. Kicking up desperately with his legs, he felt his boots connecting with the man's chest and with this momentum he flipped himself over and scrambled hands and knees to the gun. His fingers wrapped around the soothing plastic and metal and he rolled onto his back, firing upside down.

Three gunshots echoed in the basement, two to the chest and one to the face. The man stumbled and fell to the ground, blood spurting from the fresh wounds. James wasted no time getting to his feet. The noise had obviously attracted unwanted attention, and James whirled to face the basement door as it swung back on it's hinges.

The new intruder was a female, and she lurched on her feet as she looked down the stairs at James. Without warning she cut the space between them as she leaped down the stairs. James fired on pure instinct, nicking the woman in the thigh. She whirled around without pause and grabbed onto James' uniform, her fingers holding him in a grip like steel. He fired again, this time straight into her face, the semi-automatic pistol ejecting the burning hot shell casing back over his shoulder.

She sank to her knees, her hands still gripping onto him with inhuman strength. He peeled her fingers off one-by-one, his actions frantic as his mind raced towards the thought of escaping this nightmare. Finally free, he turned and ran up the stairs, ignoring the pounding in his ears. As he neared the top, he composed himself and slowed his pace.

His thoughts went to the radio in his car, and he desperately wanted to run outside. Cursing his commitment to duty, he turned to the left and headed down the long hallway he had been searching when he first entered the house. From his memory, he knew that the two whom he had just dispatched downstairs, had had a third.

Like downstairs, the curtains had all been pulled over the windows, unnervingly blocking out the light from outside. His voice quavered as he said, “Holly Glen police force, is anyone in need of assistance?”

After checking each of the bedrooms that branched off of the hallway, James paused at the final door. He could already smell the distinct odor of blood. He slowly reached out for the doorknob, his fingers resting on the cool metal. Every nerve in his body was strung as tight as it could be as he turned the handle and let the door swing open.

Peering in, he saw that the door led to the bathroom. The walls and floors were splattered with blood, and James could already see a deceased male lying lifeless on the floor, his body partially jammed behind the toilet. Blood was pooling over the floor from the tub, but the shower curtain was pulled out obscuring his view. It was a thick one with a soothing wavy light green pattern across it. If it hadn't been caked in blood from the inside, James could picture it in a magazine.

He could see a silhouette lying in the tub on the other side of the curtain. James' boots clacked across the floor, occasionally squishing on the tile when he stepped into the blood. He heard faint breathing as he came closer to the tub and drew his gun up to his chest. With a sudden movement, he yanked the curtain aside, jumping back as a limp body fell over the lip of the tub and onto the floor by his feet.

The woman now lying half in and out of the tub, was soaked in blood. Her arms were covered in scratches, and as James stepped closer he saw that her left eye had been ripped from it's socket and was dangling across her cheek like a grotesque ornament. Her shirt looked worse for the wear from an intense struggle and revealed a tattoo across her back.

Not letting his guard down, he carefully stepped over to her. Her breathing was weak as he lifted her up in his arms. She was surprisingly bulky for her smaller size, but James could tell it was from firm muscles rather than fat. He hefted her from the tub and dragged her to the door. Propping her up against the wall, James checked the hallway before returning to pick up the unconscious woman. Her head fell back as he lifted her and he felt the warmth of her skin.

As James made his way through the door he had destroyed before, he was surprised to see the sun sinking quickly in the sky. Had he really been here so long? He rushed to his patrol car and slid the woman into the backseat. Fishing around, he managed to find his cellphone in the darkening light. He slid into the front seat and grabbed for the radio.

“Dispatch!” he yelled, his voice cracking.

“Sheriff,” came an unexpected voice, filled with worry. “Where have you been?”

“Allie,” James replied, his voice full of relief. “I'll meet you at Mercy Emergency Clinic, but I need CSU and police units at this residence immediately... I...” James paused, unsure of how to recount the events that had happened in the house. “I think that I've experienced the attacks you were talking about earlier.”

Allie was silent on the other end. “What's going on James?” she said at long last, her voice low in seriousness.

“I need to write a report...” James said, his mind racing as he started the car. “I don't even believe it myself what happened. Just meet me at the clinic, okay?” He peeled from the dilapidated house, sirens blaring as he raced towards the hospital.

The woman in the backseat opened her eyes, a deep amber color with red tingeing the corners of her sclera.

Melly's arms quivered as Gina stared down at her, completely serious. “When I open this door, you know where to go, right?”

“Yes,” Melly repeated, her voice quavering as much as her arms were. “Right out the doorway to the end of the hall. Then through the emergency doors to the staircase. The secondary door is beyond that.”

Gina nodded. The last rays of light were flickering in the windows behind them, casting an eerie glow over her face. So much for the long summer days, Melly thought as she squared her shoulders. It wouldn't be a cold night if they had to spend it on the roof, but she had hoped that if they made it up there, that they'd be able to see more and likewise be seen easier. At the very least it would give them only one point of entry they'd have to protect. She refused to think of the thought that they'd also only have one point of escape.

“Wait,” Gina whispered, her voice bringing Melly out of her thoughts. “They're leaving.”

    “What?” Melly said, shocked.

From down the hall, Melly heard an agonized scream. Someone was out there! She hurried to the other side of the window on the door and looked out. The red-headed girl was rocking to and fro outside but no longer looking in at them. She instead was looking at something outside of the room to the left. The others that had been with her had already gone. At last, the red-headed girl left as well at a quick pace.

“Is someone out there?” Melly asked, her voice dropping to a whisper. Her instincts were to go and help the person, but Gina opened the door suddenly and shoved her outside.

Stumbling, Melly looked back but Gina rushed past her, heading towards the doorway to the roof. Melly followed, their footsteps echoing in the empty hall. Gina reached the door first and wrenched it open. The two girls raced up the stairs and slammed into the door at the top. It didn't budge. Melly's eyes widened as she watched Gina tug on the door.

At last, Gina cursed and slammed her fists on the heavy metal frame. “Someone's already up there, and they've barricaded it!”

“No way...” Melly said, her voice faltering as she stared helplessly at the steel barricade. “What do we do now?”

The emergency door creaked open behind them and Melly felt her skin prickle as she saw two students come in. They were drawn by the noises that had been made as Gina struck the door with the metal chair leg. Melly turned back to face Gina and began desperately pounding on the door as well.

“Let us up there! Please! They're out here!” Melly screamed, the terror rising in her throat and threatening to choke her.

“Melly stop,” Gina said suddenly, her eyes dull in defeat. “They're not going to let us up there. We have to fight. You have a gun, don't you?”

Melly looked down at the gun that was shaking in her hands. She nodded and lifted it, aiming it at one of the students. Out of the corner of her eye she saw Gina gripping the metal chair leg in determination. With a sick feeling, Melly imagined this as her last stand, and fired the gun.
