I also would like to ask each of you as individuals to sign the petition to stop SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act). This is an act that congress is trying to pass to censor our usage of the Internet.

This means google, this means yahoo, this means Wikipedia, this impacts how you will use these websites and what information is available to people like you and me.

Please either write to your local government or sign the petition online to help try and fight this censorship of information! Thank you.

  7. Chapter 5: The Bleeding

Raven opened her eyes slowly and cringed as she felt her head pounding. She sat up slowly, disoriented. Her lips were dry as she reached up to her forehead. Her fingers touched a soft cotton padding. Someone had bandaged her up. Her senses began coming back and she looked around slowly, her eyes taking in her surroundings.

Firstly, she decided she was in a hut of some sort. There was little about but the meager bed she was lying upon and a makeshift kitchen in front of her. The hut reminded her of a one room wooden cabin, with extremely specific décor. The décor being animal pelts hanging from the walls and no less than three shotguns and rifles displayed. She was wearing a flannel shirt that was not her own, and the blood had been cleaned off of her body.

She heard a door opening and scrambled backwards, noting that she had been stripped of her jeans as well. This mortifying discovery came at the wrong time as she looked up and met eyes with a rugged looking man with spiky brown hair and a scruffy beard. Blue eyes like ice stared her down and Raven felt a blush coating her skin as she remembered just then her state of undress. She grabbed the thin sheet and covered herself.

“Awake now, I see,” the man said bluntly, setting down the pistol he was carrying. Raven's eyes widened as she realized she hadn't even noticed he was carrying it.

“Who are you, what's going on?” Raven gasped out, feeling woozy again.

The man turned to her again and smirked, without answering. He had pulled two knives from his pocket and was wiping them on a dirty rag. His eyes were raking over her wolfishly and Raven quickly realized her disadvantage, pants-less and in some stranger's house. She defiantly pulled the shirt he had given her closed and glared at him.

The man took his sweet time in cleaning the knives, even daring to hum a tune as he put his big black boots up on a wooden table by his feet. “My name's Danny,” he said at last. “I was out and about and saw you under attack. Damsel in distress? I came to your aid. Ain't I a gentleman?”

Raven's eyes narrowed. Her gaze flitted to the door. Danny was between her and the door, and while he seemed to be heavily armed, she had nothing. Not even pants. That recurring thought made her furious. “Where are my clothes?” she said, her voice shaking in suppressed fury.

“Threw 'em out,” Danny said without a hint of apology in his voice.

His laid back manner was getting under Raven's skin. Despite her being from Holly Glen, she hadn't been living there for quite some time and she remembered why she couldn't stand some of the small town attitudes. Ever since she had moved to the big city, she had been doing her utmost to keep moving constantly at a breakneck pace to keep up with her younger and more trendy boyfriend.

It seemed she wouldn't get a respite from being embarrassed as her stomach began growling. Danny raised an eyebrow before laughing loudly. He reached into the bag he was carrying and pulled out a rabbit. She stared at him dumbfounded as he went into the kitchen. As he bustled about, Raven closed her eyes and leaned back. Her questions hadn't been answered thoroughly, but this man didn't seem as if he was going to kill her.

Something heavy hit her in the face and she spluttered as she opened her eyes and grabbed at it. It was a pair of worn jean pants, but she barely looked at it as Danny had moved in front of her and was studying her closely. His face was only inches from hers and she reared back by instinct, banging her head against the wall behind her.

He laughed again. “Feisty little thing, aren't ya?” he said, smirking more as he watched her cheeks burn red. “You don't look like you're from around here, but I recognize your face from somewhere.”

Raven closed her eyes again as she rubbed her head. Of course she'd be recognized as the sheriff's ex-wife, even out here in the boonies. She assumed of course, that she was in the boonies. There was no way someone lived like this in town. She slid the pants on, dismayed to find they were enormous on her. Danny had moved back into the kitchen and she observed him from where she sat.

His messy hair was stuck about in his face, and although he had an average build, his arms were enormous. She could tell by his overall unshaven face and rough features that there was nothing city about this man. Standing slowly, she looked to see if he was watching. Satisfied that she was allowed to move about without being berated for it, she went to a nearby mirror. It was dusty and covered in flecks of dirt but she could see that she had been bandaged more than adequately across her forehead.

Danny watched her from the corner of his eye as she moved about the tiny space. His carefree smile had become a grim line. His fingers moved in practiced motions as he prepared food. The woman he had picked up, he knew very well who she was. The ex-wife of Sheriff Lenart who had moved to the city four months ago. What he didn't know, is why she was here.

Raven turned to look at him just then and he began whistling, the sparkle back in his icy blue eyes. “All right, c'mere. I'll feed ya, but don't complain,” Danny said, shoving a bowl packed with meat down the tabletop.

Raven stopped it with one hand and looked down. She couldn't help the look of disgust that came across her face, but her stomach growled again and she dug in. In her current situation, she couldn't be picky.

Danny looked at her and stretched his arms above his head. “So what do you know about the stuff that's been going on around here?” he asked casually.

Raven looked up at him, her eyes dark. “You must know something yourself, as you brought me here...” she paused, wondering if he would explain what exactly had happened to her when she was stuck in her Jeep.

A heavy banging at the door sounded just then and Raven jumped. Danny picked up the pistol he had dropped on the counter earlier and quickly checked that it was loaded before walking to the door. “Who is it?” he barked gruffly.

“Mackie, now open up!” came a frantic voice from the other side.

Danny slid the door open a crack and a tall man almost fell inside. The man scrambled into the living space before noticing that Raven was there. His eyes roamed over her chest, poorly hidden by the oversized flannel for far too long before he looked up and saw Raven's disgusted scowl. Looking slightly abashed, he wiped his hands upon his pants and looked nervously at Danny.

    “Who's that?”

“A rescued damsel in distress,” Danny said calmly, shutting the door.
