High School of the Dead

  1. Kristofer Denault watched as the sheriff and his daughter ran into the night. He cursed violently, pulling his gun to his cheek and tracking their movements through the scope. Ammunition was scarce, he couldn't afford to shoot them. Cursing again, he turned his attention back to the bigger problem at hand.

The dead were fueling the excitement of those still living, and Kristofer watched the people tearing into the flesh of those that Melly and James had downed. He could hear every rending noise of bone as they succumbed to the force of jaws. It wasn't a quiet sound.

He repositioned his M16A4 and began picking them off again, trying to conserve his bullets. However in his concentration he didn't realize that they had circled behind him. With a rough pull, he felt himself tumbling off the top of the truck and falling to the ground. Ammunition conservation no longer mattered as he pulled the trigger over and over, spraying bullets everywhere.

He heard a scream from inside the truck and looked up to see a mass of them clambering up the side and into the open door. “No!” Kristopher shouted, trying to pull himself to his feet. An arm pulled him back and he was flung violently to his knees, the gun skittering across the damp ground.

Mr. Szajowski looked up as they climbed into the truck. His eyes were wide as he saw the blood-filled sclera and the teeth grinning whilst stained in blood. He pulled at his wrists in vain that were still bound tightly behind his back. The clanking made Miss Hutton turn her head to him, but her blindfold had yet to be removed so she couldn't see what he saw.

“D-Don't...” Josh said, trying to scramble away, but there was nowhere to go inside the truck. The grin got inhumanely wide, lips stretching over those bloody teeth like a macabre picture.

“What's going on Josh?” Jazmin gasped, her lips trembling. “What's going on!”

Josh shrieked as teeth ripped into his neck, the woman over him cradling his jerking form. She pulled the carotid artery with her teeth, stretching it as it squirted blood all over the interior of the truck and over Josh. He could see his own flesh, splayed out before him as she shook her head vigorously to break it's ties to his body. He screamed again, mercifully blacking out from shock.

Jazmin struggled in the corner, screaming as loud as she could, frantically twisting her head back and forth yet unable to see through the thick blindfold over her eyes. The unforgiving metal of the handcuffs held tight behind her back as she yanked futilely to get free. Despite her wild screams for Josh and for help, she heard nothing but the smacking, snarling sounds of what she only could imagine to be a wild animal.

Then she felt a breath on her face. The metallic tang of blood filled her nostrils as she cringed away. “J-Josh?” she asked meekly, her voice a squeak.

Crazed laughter was the response, and then she heard a bang. Another bang came shortly after. She screamed as blood filled her open mouth, and bits of brain matter sprayed onto her face and chest. Kristofer stood over the truck, panting and trying to catch his breath. He had shot the woman who had been eating Josh and stopped the man who was going for Jazmin.

The Beretta in his hands was slimy with blood, not all of it his. He had been dragged through the mud and had a few close calls, yet he always carried his pistol and in short quarters he knew how to use it. The forest was eerily silent now as he listened for any more signs of life. He dropped back down to the ground and began looking for his teammate's body to search for the handcuff keys.

Jazmin lay against the back of the truck, tears streaming down her face behind the blindfold. She was saved, yet Josh had not answered her and she couldn't pretend that he was still alive. Even if she could not see, she didn't think she'd ever forget the noises of chewing she heard just moments ago.

A rustling noise made her freeze, her lips tight to avoid making noise. She felt a body crawling over her legs, hands reaching up her thighs. Trembling, she felt breath on her lips. Then soft lips met hers in a deep kiss, and she recognized them immediately as Josh's. He was alive?

Jazmin was swept into the kiss, too exhausted to listen to reason. As she opened her mouth to let his tongue in, she felt him biting her lip a bit too hard. She made a noise of discomfort yet he didn't stop. It was painful now and she could taste blood. She squirmed and yelped a bit, trying to pull away. His grip was unnaturally strong, and while she knew he was fit, his strength seemed way too inhuman.

“Josh, no!” she shouted, realizing too late her mistake.

Josh bit harder, and she screamed in agony as she felt her lip being separated. At last with a sickening rip, he pulled it off and swallowed it whole. Blood ran down her chin and she felt herself going hoarse as she screamed in pain and fear.

Kristofer knew something was wrong as soon as he heard the first yelping cry from the truck. He raced back towards it, not having found the body nor the key. His boots slipped on the outside of the truck as he climbed it, and at last he got to the top. As he looked down he shrunk back in horror. Josh was on top of Jazmin who was gargling on her blood as she screamed. His teeth were in her neck and he seemed to be sawing them back and forth to break her skin.

Without a second thought Kristofer pulled out his pistol and shot Josh in the leg, his only clear shot. The new intruder distracted Josh a moment, and he paused in his task. Kristofer dropped down into the truck and in an instant positioned himself so he could shoot Josh clean through the head. Jazmin was spitting blood now, her black hair pooled around her as she lay bound and blind.

Kristofer tore the blindfold off her and looked into her eyes. They were glazed over from shock and pain. Her lips were trembling and covered in blood, small bubbles of red blowing from between her lips as she tried to form words but couldn't make a sound.

“Ma'am,” Kristofer said, dismayed to see no response. “Ma'am!”

Jazmin did not speak, and continued to blow her bloody bubbles. Kristofer cursed. The woman was in pain, and he had no way of getting her to any type of medical facility. Seeing her neck lacerated with bite marks and her bottom lip completely chewed off, he didn't know what type of help they'd even have for her.

His mind raced as he tried to make the executive decision. He could practically see her dying right before his eyes, from blood loss and trauma. He gritted his teeth and closed his eyes, raising his gun with one hand. With the pull of the trigger, the decision was made for him. He was out of bullets.
