  5. Standing in a dark conference room hands behind her back, Col Drakonis looked down at the masses below her. The ceiling to floor windows spanned the entire north side of the room, overlooking the bare expanses of training fields and the woods beyond. In the far distance, one could see the tiny lights of Holly Glen on a clear day.

Today was not a clear day. The night had rolled in with a slight fog, the heat still dissipating in the air. The alarms sounded behind her, muffled in the grand room she now stood in. The lights below were bright, positioned on the front entrance to the facility, which was currently swarmed with them. For whatever reason, the lights of the compound drew them in like moths to a flame.

In the row of high-backed leather chairs neatly lined up behind her, a woman spoke, the voice a sneering tone. “Y'all need me now?”

Veronica Drakonis was a fantastical woman, short, clean-cut with a penchant for the unusual, yet now in this situation of dire need she loathed to turn for help towards the woman behind her. Even if the solution was the most unorthodox, right up her alley, this woman known as "Fox" to most, was so slimy and uncouth. A shudder slipped down her spine as she remained facing the window.

“It would seem so,” Veronica said, feeling her phone vibrate against her hip. The text was curt, quick and concise. Outlaying the problem, she responded her fingers dancing over the screen with practiced ease.

Fox laughed obnoxiously, her cackling a harsh sound against the klaxon from the hallway outside. She stood, spinning the chair around as she sauntered over to the shorter stiff-backed Colonel. “I'll require a few things, y'know, to help me on my way,” she said, her voice a wheedling lilt.

Veronica gritted her teeth as the woman's breath hit her ear. “Don't make me regret this choice,” she said curtly and swung on her heel, leaving the room at a clipped pace.

Fox grinned ear to ear, staring down as machine gun fire mowed down a row of people far below. With a flick of her wrist, the handcuffs that had previously bound her wrists fell to the ground with a clank, and she winced as she popped her thumb back into place.

“Stupid prick,” she snarled as she twirled a thin piece of metal in her fingers. That military tightwad had no need to truss her up like this, and it irritated her to be spoken to so condescendingly.

The military had backed itself into a corner, literally. The facility only had one major entrance and escape route. Now that they had come under siege, albeit an overall underwhelming one at that, it was a hindrance to their need to come and go as they pleased.

  12. “Fox” Wulson was labeled as mentally unstable, yet she had a particular skill set that was deemed useful to the military. She was unparalleled in high-risk retrieval, yet her drug habit had driven her to the point of insanity and she had yet to fully return from there. Her odd appearance coupled with this, led her to be deemed as an embarrassment to the military, and thus was the reason that Col Drakonis had much hesitation to give Wulson any rein at all.

However, in this situation of a siege, if it could be called that, a particular subject had gone missing that had great importance to the military and the government as a whole. The carrier Antoine Calkhen had gone missing, and in a delicate predicament such as this, there was no greater expert than Fox.

Fox stretched languidly and ticked her finger against a large scar across her neck, her pigtails bobbing as she did so. Cracking her neck, she closed her eyes and began to think. The siege had happened at the most inopportune time. Although it wasn't yet being disclosed to the majority of the facility, the fact that the previously incarcerated infected had escaped would not be kept secret for long. Most of the armed guards had been warned to shoot upon mere suspicion as the infection was not yet identified in how it spread.

Fox snickered as she thought of how amusing it would be to see the chaos that was about to erupt. Antoine Calkhen was the main priority, as she needed to remain alive yet she was the cause of most of the fiasco in the first place. Fox's mind raced, as she tried to suppress the shudders that wracked her frame as she experienced another wave of withdrawal symptoms.

Antoine Calkhen had been stabilized on medication that specifically kept her in a cataleptic state, however her body had swiftly begun developing anti-bodies that dulled the effects of the drug until she was able to move. In the mobilization following the breach of the front entrance, Antoine had slipped away almost completely unnoticed.

However, that wasn't the only thing Antoine had done. She had released most of the captive live infected in the lower level laboratories to cause mass confusion, resulting in her slipping off the radar. The outer posts had confirmed she had not left the main operations facility, however with over 80,000 sq ft in the conjoined buildings, it was not as if she'd be easy to find. If she managed to slip outside of the main facility, the difficulty of retrieval would become exponentially worse.

Fox paced back and forth and froze as she heard machine gun fire close to the room she was in. She couldn't help a small grin as she realized that it had begun. They had gotten in. This facility was going to burn tonight.
