“What's going on?” Melly screamed, her voice cracking at the gunfire. Kristofer ignored her as he grabbed his gun. The truck shook just then as if a giant force had hit it all at once. Looking out the window, Kristofer felt trepidation as he realized that they were all working together to shake the vehicle. James struggled with his arms behind his back. “Let me help!” he shouted. “I can't uncuff you,” Kristofer said softly. “The keys are with the men who were in the front.” “Are you serious?” James shouted, kicking the floor in frustration. Kristofer leaned over and pulled the blindfold off James and Melly. He was reaching for the teachers when the truck shook again. Everyone inside screamed as it tipped and everyone was suddenly flung to one side. The sound of crunching metal assaulted their ears and James looked up in time to see the door being pulled open. Kristofer let loose a spray of bullets and heard the satisfied squelching noise as they burst into flesh and squirted blood over the door. James struggled to pull his bound arms to the front of his body, groaning as his shoulder popped in the socket. “Help us,” Miss Hutton cried, still bound and blindfolded. Josh was in the same situation but he was trying to shake the blindfold off, unsuccessfully. Melly was crying a little as she watched her dad struggle to bring his legs through his arms. The blood was dripping down from the open door that was now their roof, and Kristofer was attempting to climb out. Kristofer managed to finally pull himself up into a sitting position on the side of the door and began shooting as best he could, aiming for chest and head shots. James finally managed to pull his arms out from behind his back and reached over to pull Melly close. She was shaking in terror. He released her and Melly began working her arms that were bound behind her back to the front of her body. It was painful and it wasn't easy. Miss Hutton sat in the corner, gasping quietly to herself, bound and blindfolded. In Josh's struggling he had managed to pull the blindfold a bit up his face and could see what was going on finally. Kristofer gritted his teeth as he saw the waves of enemies still coming for them. “Let me help, as best I can,” James said again. “I need my guns where are they?” “Locked up front,” Kristofer said, absorbing the recoil of his gun. James swore violently and reached up to the door, trying to pull himself up. It was very hard to do as his wrists were still bound together and he gritted his teeth as pain shot through both his arms. Kristofer had no time to pause in shooting in order to keep them away. However, they were getting bold. Now they were jumping forward and trying to pull him from the truck. James finally pulled himself to the top of the truck and reached down for Melly. Melly was trembling as she reached her arms up, and she could see James' pained expression as he strained his muscles to lift her. At last she hooked a leg over the top of the vehicle and scrambled to the side, now free of the tipped truck. James looked around and saw the driver's gun lying on the ground, relatively ignored. It needed timing. The sheriff waited until Kristofer let loose another spray of bullets and as they backed away, he leaped from the top of the truck to the ground. He caught himself with his fingertips and kept going, diving for the gun. He felt hands gripping his clothing, but ignored it, whirling around to lift it. With it resting underneath his arm, his fingers barely reached the trigger. The recoil was so great it almost shot the gun out from his tentative hold. The long assault rifle wasn't easy to use with hands bound like his, so he repositioned it tighter underneath his arm and pulled the trigger again. Within seconds James was surrounded and he could hear Melly screaming from far away. Hands pulled him down to the ground and he could hear the staccato pulsing of Kristofer's rifle. A man with half his face bashed in and bleeding from his one good eye was leering over him, leaning down with jaws snapping. Others were trying to from what James could tell, rip him apart literally. Then a shower of blood exploded over his head and James looked up to see Melly standing over him with a black military baton that she had taken from the MSgt. “Dad!” she shouted, swinging it again. Kristofer watched from the top of the truck, and looked through his sights again, aiming for a woman behind Melly. As her head exploded, Melly turned and gasped. It was too dangerous down here on the ground. Melly pulled her father to his feet. He grabbed onto her and began running. “Where do you think you're going?” shouted MSgt Denault as he stood up on the truck. James ignored him and kept running, almost dragging Melly behind him. Melly looked back for a moment tears coming to her eyes but she swallowed the lump in her throat and ran as fast as she could.
