    Leirra

As a general rule, Leirra stayed away from parties. Something always went wrong.

And this night was no different.

"This is gonna be the best party ever!" Samantha squealed.

Leirra and Zoe muttered a forced agreement then trudged inside the small one-story house, the effervescent blonde skipping alongside them. A DJ was playing all of the current tunes. Two guys from Leirra's English class were playing beer pong in the corner. Groups of students clustered around the edges of the room, most holding plastic red cups taken from a guy acting as a bartender behind the kitchen island.

In other words, it was a typical party scene. But appearances could be deceiving.

Leirra chuckled in amusement as Samantha dragged Zoe away. It seemed as though the more her roommate resisted, the harder she tried.

    "Hey, Leirra!"

I don't want to talk to any of you, Leirra thought to herself. But, never being one to get angry, she merely pasted a smile on her face and turned around. "Hello…" what was his name again? Oh right. "…Chris."

    He grinned. "How are you?"

    "I'm well. You?"

The brown haired boy grimaced. It was the first time Leirra had seen him in a bad mood. "Not so well. I walked in poison ivy-" he lifted up his pant leg to show her a grotesque looking rash "-and now I'm super itchy."

"Sorry to hear that," she replied politely. "I'm lucky though. I'm not allergic to poison ivy and I never get a reaction to it." As soon as the words left her mouth, she regretted them. That was just encouraging him to continue the conversation.

"Oh really? You're so lucky. I've heard of people that are like that, but never actually met someone. Are you-"

"Excuse me, I have to go get a drink," Leirra interrupted. Anything to get away from people. Students were crowding her, jostling her, the walls closing in and sounds getting overwhelmingly loud. She longed to be outside in the refreshing air.

"Oh, okay." Chris looked disappointed. "Well, I hope your drink is delicious."

Leirra nodded and walked towards the granite counter, feeling his eyes on her back the whole time. She concentrated on the ground. Maybe if she couldn't see the people, her claustrophobia would get better. "Just a beer, please," Leirra said without looking up.

A few moments passed before she heard the drink slammed on the island, a couple drops spilling out as a result. Leirra glanced at the bartender and her stomach dipped.

It was Terrence, her brother's friend.

He had always prided himself on being able to get any girl he wanted, which was why he had tried to hard to get Leirra to sleep with him. His advances had become increasingly forward, and she had suspected with an impending sense of doom that one day when he visited Tyler he would rape her. That was why Leirra had always found an excuse to leave the house when she learned Terrence was coming over.

Grabbing her drink, Leirra hurried to to an unoccupied corner and shuddered. Hopefully she would never see him again.

"Leirra!" Chris bounded over to her. "How are you?"

She groaned inwardly, but answered mildly. "I'm well, same as the last time you asked." Chris shifted and she peered at his ankle. No redness. "Where's your rash?"

"My rash? I… uh… well, you know how the girl who lives here is pretty rich? Well, she has this fancy anti-itch concealer meant for bug bites. She applied it to my ankle and it's working pretty well." He shrugged, no doubt embarrassed. "Don't tell anyone I'm wearing makeup, though. Even if it is on my leg."

Leirra sipped her beer, glancing around. She immediately felt sick. Dancers seemed to be swaying closer and closer to her…

"Excuse me. I'm going to get some fresh air." She took another small sip, threw the cup aside, then all but ran out the door.

Outside wasn't much better. Students were milling around the freshly mowed lawn, chatting, laughing, and throwing up.

Hm. There was a creek not too far from where Leirra was, and it was bound to be quieter.

She started towards it, but had just stepped into the forest when she staggered and fell to the earthen floor.

Leirra didn't know it yet, but she had been poisoned.

"Come on!" Samantha screamed over the blasted music, as she dragged Zoe around.

"I can't run in these damn shoes!" Zoe screamed back, then glanced down at the black pumps Samantha made her wear.

Samantha finally found the destination they were trying to find, The bar. Zoe leaned against it.

"Two beers!" Samantha said to the bartender.

He placed two red solo cups down in front of them. Samantha picked one up.

"The others for you." She sipped her as she eyed the dance floor.

Zoe drank a few sips of the beer. "I'm gonna go see if I can find Leirra."

"She'll be fine! Your gonna have some fun!"She smirked at Zoe.

Without a warning she dragged Zoe towards the dance floor. Zoe stumbled after her, dropping her red solo cup of beer.

"Hey! You okay?"A familiar voice said in a deep toned voice. Zoe suddenly felt an arm around her, she automatically started to break away. She didn't like to held.

"Get the hell off me!" She pushed the unknown man away, stumbling into a group of chicks.

"Watch it, Freak!" They glared at Zoe, then went back to giggling.

"Who the fuck are you calling freak!" Zoe returned the glare.

They eyed her, looking up and down her body. "Look in the mirror then come ask again. Then maybe you should check your eye sight."

Zoe started to walk towards them, they taking steps back.

"Um... Zoe is it?" A nervous voice said behind her, she turned her head to see the nerdy looking kid from earlier, Chris.

    "Yeah, do you need something?"

"Oh nothing at all. I wanted to know if you wanted to dance, and I saw the little accident back there so here," He handed Zoe a bottled beer.

"Um I don't dance. And thanks. Anyway, I think I might be leaving soon. This isn't really my type of party. But first I need to find someone."

"Oh who maybe I could help."

"Nah, I don't need help." She looked down at his skinny self. "And you might wanna get that leg checked out."
