It's not so much that they understand you in any language. It's that they memorize the tone of what you say. For example, I can call my cat literally anything and as long as i use the same baby-talk intonation that I use when i call her name she'll respond. They will memorize a handful of words if they hear you say it enough and the meaning behind it is obvious. Like when dogs hear their owner say walk and get used to being taken for a walk whenever that word is used.
