Countdown to Lunar New Year 2025!

  1. I'm excited to see the chinatown in my city this week, hoping that i'll be able to see the fireworks display and to buy the traditional rice cake in a chinese store downtown. Missing the old days where my only problem is how to finish the foods on plate during this time 😂❤️

  2. Last year, my friend invited me to her family Lunar New Year celebration. It was my first time experiencing the holiday, and while I had heard bits and pieces about it before, I didn't fully understand its depth and importance. That evening, I learned something that stayed with me which was the meaning behind giving and receiving red envelopes.
After a delicious dinner of dumplings, fish, and rice cakes, Emily's grandparents began handing out red envelopes to the younger family members. Each envelope, adorned with intricate gold designs, contained crisp bills. Curious but hesitant, I asked Emily about the tradition. She explained that these hongbao symbolize good luck and blessings for the year ahead. The act of giving them isn'tjust about the money, it was more like about passing on wishes for happiness, health, and prosperity. I noticed the reverence with which everyone, even the children, received the envelopes. They accepted them with both hands and offered heartfelt thanks, reinforcing the importance of respect and gratitude within the family. Emily also shared that traditionally, elders give red envelopes to younger generations as a way to encourage them, but in return, it's customary for the younger family members to wish their elders a prosperous year. The simplicity and thoughtfulness of the tradition struck me. It wasn't just a transaction; it was a tangible expression of care and connection. That night, I didn't just learn about red envelopes. I came to appreciate the importance of generosity and the small, meaningful ways we can show love within our families. Since then, I've tried to carry a bit of that spirit into my own life, especially during celebrations.

  3. I dont celebrate the Lunar New year because before I’ve done some research I never realized how important it actually is, but the first thing I learned is my animal is the goat. Other facts I found interesting about Lunar New year is learning it is 15 days long🤯Another fact I also found interesting is you’re not allowed to Wash clothes, hair, or bathe in any way. I also found it interesting you can’t sweep, or throw out garbage. I also love the fact that everything is decorated in Red because red is my favorite color, and I wanna say Thank z you to Day for Hosting and actually getting me to learn some new things about Lunar New Year.🫶🏼🧧

  6. The holiday began as a time for feasting and to honor household and heavenly deities, as well as ancestors

Also known as a new year or new start

  7. One thing I have learned about Lunar New Year is that it’s good luck to wear something new on the first day of Lunar New Year because it is said to bring good luck. Another thing I found interesting was that if it’s your zodiac for the New Year it’s good to wear something red to bring good luck and protection because I believe (correct me if I’m wrong) you need to be more cautious during that year. I found a lot of the teachings friends have given me very interesting and love that it’s a huge celebration that can bring loved ones together 🤍

I also have a memory of when I was younger a friend from school brought red envelopes and gave us teachings, it was an amazing experience and I’m grateful for what I have learned from them.

  9. I don't really have any personal memories to share since I've never actually celebrated Lunar New Year myself, but honestly, I love everything about it. It feels so magical and amazing, even from the outside. What gets me most excited though, are the limited time things that pop up during this holiday from people who do celebrate it.

Like in the games I play. There are always these special events where you get beautifully designed items or skins, and they're always so good. I get hyped when Lunar New Year rolls around because you just know the good stuff is coming. It's probably the only holiday I get excited for even though I'm not part of the culture.

I wish I had stories or something more meaningful to share, but I don't. I know a little, like the Chinese zodiacs and some basic traditions, but not much else. Anything more, and I'd just be making it up. Still, even as an outsider, it’s one of my favorite times of the year.

  12. Just like the normal new year celebration, I think it's a tradition to light up fireworks to ward off bad luck and other negative energies. Wishing you guys esp. those who celebrate CNY to stay safe and enjoy eating chinese dishes w your fams. 🥹🫶🏻

  13. I don't celebrate Chinese New Year but it's always fun to learn about others traditions! It was interesting to find out which animal year I was born on or that CNY doesn't really have a specific date and it can be different from year to year. Also more than 2 weeks of celebration and festivities sound amazing ♥️

  15. My favorite memory from Lunar New Year is when my family comes together to celebrate and enjoy tikoy. It’s a simple tradition, yet memorable. For me, the most meaningful part is the time we share, savoring that delicious food. Thanks to Lunar New Year, tikoy has become one of my favorite foods, especially during snack time

  16. Although my family doesn’t formally celebrate the Lunar New Year, I have fond memories tied to this occasion. My Lola, who always made our home feel warm and welcoming, used to cook tikoy for everyone. She’d slice it thinly, coat it in egg, and fry it to golden perfection creating a sweet and chewy treat we all enjoyed for our merienda.

The highlight was not the tikoy itself, but the feeling of being surrounded by family. It's the togetherness and love that make those memories meaningful to me.

  18. One of my favorite memories of Lunar New Year is from when I was a kid visiting my grandparents’ house. The moment I stepped inside, I was surrounded by the smell of homemade dumplings and the warmth of family laughter. My grandma, with her hands dusted in flour, taught me how to fold dumplings properly though mine always ended up looking a little lopsided.

That year, I learned that Lunar New Year isn’t just about red envelopes and fireworks it’s about family, traditions, and starting fresh with good intentions. Even now, whenever I eat dumplings, I think of those moments in my grandma’s kitchen simple, happy, and full of love.
