  11. Marie's POV
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    I watched Lily cry for a moment. Phillip had never gone so far before! Why did he hit her so many times? I knelt down, pulling the young woman into my arms.
    "Shh, shh..." I held her tenderly, the way I used to when she was a little girl. "It will be okay, little bird, you'll see..."
    Lily clutched herself to me, sobbing, "No, Marie, it just won't! He is never kind, and I never want to see him again!"
    Tears formed in my eyes as I thought of what had just happened. My face was starting to ache more and more. I couldn't see from my left eye; it was so swollen. I hugged Lily tightly, thinking of how she must feel. Why did Phillip do this? I remember how he used to be, so kind and gentle. It was all before Carol, before Lily, before everything.
    But, now wasn't the time to think about him. Lily needed me. "Let's go upstairs, now." I suggested.
    Lily nodded into my neck. I pulled her up to her feet, and took her back into her bedroom. "Marie..." She wiped her eyes and looked at my swollen face, concerned.
    "Don't worry about me, Lily. Go to the bath, so I can treat your bruising." I told her firmly.
    "Oh, Marie!" She wailed, hugging me tightly before running into the bathroom. I heard the bath water, and went to the kitchen. I gathered rags and ice from around the kitchen and headed back upstairs.
    I sighed, thinking of the many bruises that must be forming on Lily's body. This was going to be a long night.
    Lily's POV
    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
    I sat on the floor watching the porcelain, white, bear claw bathtub fill with warm water. I didn't know what to do. Father has never treated me so harshly. Yes, he has hurt me before but never in such...such a horrid way! My eyes filled with new tears threatening to escape.
    I wiped my eyes and stood slowly as Marie entered the room.
    "I'm leaving. You can come if you wish but I'm leaving whether or not you do." I walked slowly to my room and pulled a backpack out from under my bed.
    Marie stared at me questioningly. "What do you mean leaving?"
    I took a deep breath. "I mean leaving, running away, never coming back." I tried to hold back the angry years that were beginning to reform. My voice was shaking as I continued. "I will not sit here and be treated like garbage!!! I can't handle it! He treats me like a punching bag!"
    I went to my dresser and started pulling out only clothes necessary to keep me warm and comfortable. I look back at Marie, tears spilling out of my eyes. She was at her dresser pulling out clothes also.
    "What are you doing?" I asked her.
    "What's it look like? Child, if you are leaving I'm going with you no matter what. Your father crossed the line today and I won't stand for it."
    I looked at her and smiled. "Then let's get packing."
