Blood On the Ice

  1. I carefully crept over the cliff's edge, slowly placing one foot on the tiny amount of space I had. I lowered my other leg, and sharply inhaled: the snow under my feet shifted under my weight. If I messed this up, I might end up like Anna did, not only a few minutes ago.
I took out my cellphone and dialed 911. They answered immediately.
    "911, what is your emergency?"
    "I need help!" I sobbed.
    "Ma'am, what happened?"
"I went on a jog, and I fell over a ledge! Someone tried to help me up, b-but they slipped. They-they fell further than I did!" I wailed.
"Stay put, miss. Where are you?"
    "The Town Park Trail."
    "Dispatchers are on their way."

I hung up. Yes! It worked, I had convinced the police of an accident, and so far, gotten away with it. I hoped it would keep my name in the clear, people wouldn't suspect the Damsel in Distress.
I heard the familiar wail of sirens approaching, and I gripped against the cliff, pretending I was hanging on for dear life. Multiple police cars and ambulances pulled up to the path, and to my surprise, Matthew was there. He rushed over before anyone got out of their cars. That made me smile. A little.
    "Rose, don't move, ok?"
"Matthew, I'm scared. Please help me!"
I felt the ground beneath my feet start to give way with each tiny weight shift I made. My heart skipped a beat. Now I was in actual danger. I frantically shouted for Matthew, and he reached out his hand. Before my hand could touch his, the ground crumbled.
    I fell.
My stomach dropped. I let out a bloodcurdling scream, and the wind whipped past me at a terrifying speed. There was another small landing below me, and I hit it with a crack, much like Anna.
A searing pain burst through my side, and my head. I tried to lift my hand to inspect my head, but pain shot through my ribs, causing me to cry out and let my arm fall back to the ground. I felt a wetness trail from the side of my head, and to the floor. It didn't take a rocket scientist to know I was bleeding. I coughed uncontrollably, and it sent more pain to my side. I guessed I had broken a few of my ribs. I tasted blood at my lips. This was bad.
Suddenly, I heard the protests of officers; they were fiercely shouting orders at someone. I slightly craned my head to see Matthew climbing down the cliffside, using anything jutting out to lower himself further down. Soon he was a short distance away, and he hopped down next to me.
    "Matthew…" I choked.
Matthew rushed over and picked me up. Despite the tremendous amount of pain I was in, I felt calm in Matthew's arms.
    "I'm sorry." he said.
    "For what?"
    "I didn't keep my promise. I didn't protect you."
"You are now, Matthew. Against the other officer's orders, you came down here for me." I managed to say.
Matthew sighed, and his eyes trailed down to the ground.
    "That's strange…"
    "What?"
    "You landed in that rosebush."
I turned my head. He was right. There were crushed roses where I had landed. That explained my scratches and torn clothing. But how were they still alive? It was freezing outside. Yet they were a striking crimson against the snow.
    "Matthew?"
    "Yes?"
"I'm sorry about last night. I was nervous, I guess. All this death lately is making me feel like I'll die next. But avoiding you isn't like avoiding death."
    "It's ok, Rose."
I wanted to kiss him. I really did, but as soon as I leaned in, the sound of propellors hit my ears. Above us, a helicopter hovered in the air, with a stretcher attached to a rope hanging from it. The helicopter lowered, making the wind around us shift, and making it impossible to hear.
Matthew carefully set me on the stretcher, and he sat on the edge of it, giving me plenty of room. I shook my head and pulled him closer, and wrapped my arms around his waist. I didn't want him to leave when we got close to the top of the cliff. He smirked and strapped on the safety straps over the both of us, and he tugged twice at the rope. We were lifted from the ground, until we were higher than the trees and I could see over some buildings.
The helicopter moved forward, in the direction of the hospital. I would've been scared of the outrageous height, but Matthew was there.
That was really all that mattered to me.
