I ran. I ran as far as my legs could take me. I couldn't bear the look of absolute horror frozen on Matthew's face when he saw me. It killed me inside that he knew who I truly was. My breathing increased in speed as I burst out of the park, wincing at the scratches the hedges gave me. Sprinting down the street, I vaulted over the back fence to my backyard, and stopped in front of the sliding glass door. Luckily, my mother wasn't home. Bringing my elbow sharply forward, the door shattered, glass shards clattering to the floor. I stepped inside the living room, only to be stopped by a voice. "Rose!" I froze. It was Matthew. Springing forward, I grasped a giant glass shard in my hand. His eyes widened and he stepped forward. "Rose... how could you kill those people?" I shook my head wildly, tears flying to the carpet. "You wouldn't understand, nobody can understand how I am!" "That's because you never let them get close to you"- "Matthew! You're the closest one to me, and even you wouldn't understand! You don't love me." "Of course I"- "No! You love the side of me that's considered normal. I...I'm a monster!" I choked, squeezing my eyes shut. Sirens whirred in the distance, and the flashing lights shone against the front windows. Car tires screeched against the road. Suddenly, his lips touched mine, and I snapped my eyes open in shock. After everything I did, despite the fact I was holding a sharp piece of glass, Matthew would kiss me? "No matter what, Rose, I'll still love you." he murmured. I felt a tear drop on my shoulder, and I looked up. Matthew was crying silently, his eyes closed. There were shouts by the front door, somebody pounding at it with their fist. "Police! Open up!" I bit my lip and strengthened my grip on the shard of glass, taking a small step away from Matthew. He opened his eyes and reached out his hand, a worried look on his face. "What are you doing...?" I didn't answer and held the glass tighter, it cut into my hand. My blood dripped down my hands, staining the carpet. "We're breaking down the door!" a burly voice growled. It sounded like the chief. Matthew sighed and pulled me to him, wrapping his arms around me, right as the door burst open. "Anderson! Get over here!" "She has a weapon! Open fire!" The sounds of multiple guns cocking simultaneously pierced my eardrums. Matthew pushed me to the side, standing in front of the chief. "She won't hurt anyone! Leave her alone!" "She's a menace to society!" the chief spat. He reached around Matthew, and pointed the gun at me, pointing the trigger. Bang. The gunfire's noise reverberated throughout the house, and it was deadly silent before Matthew started screaming. "Rose! NO!" I looked down at myself, and touched my hand to my stomach. It was bleeding profusely, and spots of black spread across my vision. The searing pain kicked in, making me drop to my knees, a high pitched keening all I heard. I saw everyone yelling, their mouths moving, but their voices inaudible. Matthew was struggling against three other officers that held him back, screaming and crying all at the same time. I felt the carpet touch my cheek. I had slumped over without realizing it. My blood was everywhere, a striking crimson against the white carpet and furniture. It trickled from my mouth as I managed a weak smile, locking eyes with Matthew. "Goodbye."
