  13. Two weeks after I got out of the hospital, my mother came into my room, the house phone in her hand. She looked hopeful, and I immediately knew she wanted me out of the house.
"It's Matthew. He wants to take you skating." she said, holding a hand over the receiver.
I sighed. Even though I wanted to stay inside, I convinced myself I should go and get some fresh air. Whatever made my mother happy, I guessed I would do. I picked up the phone and smiled.
"Hi Rose. If you're still not feeling up to it, you don't have to come skating." Matthew said.
    "...It's okay. I'll come." I say.
"Really? Great! I- um, I'll pick you up in 15 minutes?" I could hear the relief in Matthew's voice.
    "Sure. See you then. Bye."
I hung up and handed the phone back to my mother. She smiled. I shot her a knowing look and smirked.

Exactly fifteen minutes later, I opened the door to see Matthew there, about to ring the doorbell. He flushed a bright red as I laughed and walked outside, shutting the door behind me.
"This place is an outdoor rink, if that's alright."
"It's just fine, Matthew. Don't worry about me."
"Since the accident I don't think I can stop worrying about you."-
I grasped Matthew's hand and squeezed lightly, stopping him midsentence. He grinned sheepishly at me as we reached the rink, and he held led me to a nearby bench. I laced up my skates and stood, stepping carefully on the ice.
"I need to go rent my skates. I'll be back, okay?"
    "Okay." I said, skating away.
I heard two girls laughing, and turned.

A girl named Livi Monroe was standing there, whispering to another girl who's name was Barbie. Well, her nickname was Barbie, I didn't know her real name. She spotted me and smirked, flinging her blonde hair to the side.
"Oh look. Rose is here by herself." she sneered.
"I'm not. In fact, my boyfriend's inside right now."
"What a liar. It's pathetic you have an imaginary boyfriend." Barbie retorted.
"It's pathetic that you act like you own everyone because your ignorant father's the principal." I said, unfazed.

Barbie's face turned bright red as Livi muffled a snicker behind her hand. Turning, I skated away. The sounds of blades against the ice behind me made it obvious they were following. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw a thin ice sign. I slowed down,
"Rose! I'll tell my dad you said that!"
"Oh, I'm so scared." I retorted sarcastically.
Livi narrowed her eyes along with Barbie.
"You should be scared." Livi hissed, and she shoved me, sending me closer to the thin ice sign. And that gave me an idea. I smirked and tossed insults at the two of them, and watched them get angrier and angrier. Barbie clenched her hands.
"What? Can't talk because I'm telling the truth?" I growled.
Barbie and Livi's eyes flashed with anger, and she grasped my shirt front. I took the opportunity and let myself fall backwards, into the ice. For a split second, there was silence. I made eye contact with the two of them, and giggled. Then the ice cracked, and the three of us plunged into the freezing water.

Barbie and Livi immediately tried to breathe, which was very stupid on their part. Still holding on to whatever breath I had left, I kicked them both in the stomachs. Bubbles bursted from their mouths as they screamed. They didn't have any air left. I shoved them deeper into the water, keeping them there against their struggles. I pressed my hands to their necks, to see if they had pulses. After a while, they didn't.
I carefully gripped the edge of the ice above my head, and pushed them away from me with my other hand. Barbie and Livi floated away, towards the thicker and more stable ice. If someone saw them, it would take a while to hack through the ice. It would be of no use anyways. I looked up to see people starting to run over, their shouts of worry muffled underwater. Unable to hold my breath anymore, I gasped, taking in a mouthful of water. I couldn't keep my eyes open, and I slowly sank into the dark, cold water.

    Matthew's POV
    ~
I returned outside with my skate rentals, slightly irritated at the long line. I hoped Rose wasn't getting bored waiting for me. At the thought of Rose, I scanned the rink for her.
I couldn't see where she was. Slightly panicked, I looked for her again.
Then I saw her. There were two girls shouting at Rose, skating closer to her. Rose calmly responded, her face blank and unreadable. Suddenly the blonde grabbed her, and Rose fell backwards.
    My heart stopped beating.
    "No…" I whispered.
The only thing I heard was the ice crack, and I only caught a glimpse of Rose's mesmerizing grey eyes before she fell through with a splash.

I felt my legs moving on their own accord, as if I was possessed. I ran towards the thin ice sign, sliding a little because I wasn't wearing my skates. I cursed myself for not putting them on; I would've made it there quicker. Others started to gather around the hole, worried looks on their faces.
"Call an ambulance and get away from the ice! It's not safe!" I shouted, not even bothering to show the people my badge so they would hurry up.
I slid into the water, and looked around. I didn't see the two other girls Rose was with. I looked down and at the bottom of the lake, Rose lay there, her eyes closed. Her black hair framed her face, the water moving it around so it almost looked alive. Swimming towards her, I grasped her hands and tugged her to the surface. Pushing her onto the ice, I ordered people to go see if they could spot the other two girls. Sirens blared in the distance, and even more people were here now.
I looked at Rose. Her lips were a light blue instead of their usual natural pink, and her skin was a pale, marble color. I checked for her pulse, and I barely felt it through the surface of her wrist.
Pinching Rose's nose, I began CPR, pressing my lips to hers and blowing in as much air as I could.
    I wouldn't lose her... I wouldn't.

    Rose's POV
    ~
It was dark... wherever I was. I was cold, and didn't feel anything. I wanted to open my eyes, but they were too heavy. By now I thought I was dead. Or close to death, I've never been so weak before.
And then I felt a burst of air fly into my lungs, and the presence of someone's lips on mine. They felt familiar, but they were almost unbearably warm. With each touch, I felt stronger. At least strong enough to see. I fluttered my eyes open, and I saw a faint silhouette of a guy's face.
    "Rose..." he breathed.
I wretched and coughed up water, letting it mix with the hot tears rushing down my cheeks. It was then that I realized how cold I was, and I violently shivered. Two arms encircled me, and pulled me closer. I looked up; It was Matthew. He saved my life, again. It was unbelievable how devoted he was.
    "M-M-Matthew..." I stuttered.
"I thought you were gone, Rose."
I turned my eyes to see the police cutting through the ice, pulling Barbie and Livi through the surface. An EMT checked for a pulse, and shook his head to the others. They loaded the girls up on stretchers, and put white sheets over their bodies. They were dead.
I smiled, pressing my face into Matthew's chest.
