  7. I felt awkward as I sat in the middle of my English class. Mr.Quinn stood at the front and taught us how to write a basic essay. End of the year finals were coming up. This... was a great opportunity for me to find work.

    "Jane."

I quickly turned my attention to the front of the classroom.

"Jane. Would you like to explain to the class what a hook and a bridge is to an essay?"

I shook my head. I hated speaking out in front of people.

"If you don't even know, then perhaps it would be a good idea to pay attention," he said rather rudely.

    A few people giggled.

"She never pays attention in class," whispered the girl behind me.

Pissed off, I stood up. "Don't treat me like I'm stupid!" I shouted at him. "I know what they are! A hook is something that grabs the readers attention at the very beginning... and the bridge is what links the hook to the entire essay," I said and I sat down rather embarrassed.

"Well then Jane. Maybe if you weren't so quiet then maybe you'd have decent marks in my class."

Some people laughed and a boy threw an eraser at me. "Loser! Just because you don't have parents doesn't mean you can act however you want! It's no wonder they left! Who would want a girl like you? They were probably embarrassed by you!" he shouted and the whole class started laughing.

I wanted to cry. I wanted to lea ve. But my body wouldn't allow it. I looked up at Mr.Quinn who said nothing. He stood there, his eyes on me. At last I stood up and ran towards the door. I pushed it open and ran. I ran as fast as I could.

"Miss Fordman!" shouted the hall monitor.

I didn't stop. I ran until I got to the gym. I ran across to the girls change room and went to the showers. I needed to cool down, I needed to do something to take my mind off of everything. I turned on the shower and sat down, letting the cool water splash all over me. My clothes were now drenched and so were my shoes. But my mind felt somewhat at ease.

"Was I... that much of a burden...?" I whispered.

I closed my eyes and leaned back.

    "You weren't," said a voice.

My eyes shot open and my blood ran cold. Mr.Quinn stood there, looking at me.

"What are you doing?" he asked.

"What am I doing?! What are you doing?! This is the girls change room! Please leave!" I shouted.

"God. You're so immature," he said and he walked towards me.

I realized that he meant to come in as well. "No! Don't! You'll get w..." I began though it was too late. He already entered the shower.

He sat next to me and as I moved to get up, he grabbed my wrist and pulled me back down.

"No. You made me get in here, you don't get to leave."

"What did I do?! I never said for you to come in!" I shouted angrily. "You chose to on your own!"

"But if you weren't in here, then I wouldn't be either."

I rolled my eyes. Just what exactly was he saying? I couldn't understand. I was surprised at his next action. He wrapped an arm around me and pulled me close to him.

    "I'm sorry," he said.

    "Why?"

"I didn't say anything... I left you there humiliated. I'm sorry. I just... I didn't know what to say."

"That's okay... I didn't know what to say either," I said quietly.

    "I should have done something..."

    "I said its fine."

He laid against the shower wall and closed his eyes. I did the same.

I can't say that I was not happy that he had come for me. But I can't say I was thrilled. The one thing I was happy for sure about... Was for the water that hid all the tears my eyes formed. He hadn't noticed... I was glad for that...
