  17. -I walk sadly to the lake not noticing Marian a few yards beside me as I stand at the shore. She had been out of my peripheral vision. I clench the ring tightly urging myself to throw it into the water but find myself unable to do it. I whisper-

    "Why Marian...I loved you...."
