We finally get to our hang out spot; Bruxie, a Waffle House, that is extremely delicious. We order out waffle sandwiches and sit down with our drinks.

"So, if it's okay, do you mind telling me about Oliver?" Preston says slowly.

    "I um don't know," I respond awkwardly.

"If you don't, I understand," Preston offers a sympathetic smile.

I take a deep breath and sigh, "No, I want to. I should, I mean. I need to get over it some day, huh?"

"So, when did you start dating?" he asks.

"When I was a freshman. He was a junior, my brother's friend," I say quietly.

    "Oh! You have a brother?"

"Yeah. But we don't talk. He's off at college."

"Oh, I see. How did Oliver break your heart?"

    "Ummm...."

"I'm sorry... I don't mean it so straightforwardly like that."

    "Have you ever loved someone?"

"Well, none of the people I dated were lovable."

"Oh well, you know what? Love fucking sucks."

"Oliver might be your first love, but he won't be your last."

"I try not to care about him."

"I know. So, what did you do together?"

I explain the whole Grammy's thing and the notes and everything else.

"Wow. He seemed really into you."

"He was," I whisper, "he also took me to Junior Prom."

    "How was that?" he asks.

    "Well..."

    ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

    Flashback:

I get up at 1PM without getting yelled at by my parents.

This is great.. I smile to myself.

It's the day of Prom and I caught up (majorly!) on my beauty sleep. I've never been so excited in my life. My mom and I spent ages on finding the perfect dress; I have tons already, but she insisted on buying me a new one. We went to the same boutique I got my Grammy's dress from and found another amazing dress! I'm getting Skylere to do my make up, and Danny for my hair (obviously). Today will be perfect.

    ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

"Can you put your dress on, honey? I need to figure out what'll make you look even more amazing," Skylere smiles at me; she came over to my house to do the make up.

I go into the room and slip on my Prom dress. It's an elegant number, a Greek style dress, with the whole one shoulder bandage affect. The strap stretches from the front to my back creating an
X shape and dropping to the side elegantly. The dress itself is mint green cascading down to my ankles and cinched under my chest with a belt of silver jewels and rhinestones.

I walk out of the my bedroom and into dressing room, where my make up is being done.

"This is gorgeous, Terissa!" Skylere excitedly squeals, "your name up will be so fun to do!"

"My shoes are the same silver ones I wore to the Grammy's," I say smiling at her compliment.

I go back to my bedroom and peel off my dress, gingerly, and put my t-shirt and denim shorts back on. I take the dress into the dressing room and hang it up on a rack I have.

"I'm going to go with silver eyeshadow and make up sparkles to make your eyes brighter! I'm thinking a cat eye for your eyeliner and doll-like false eyelashes! You won't look gaudy though, I promise! And hmmm. Pink blush and I'm thinking a baby pink, nude lipstick!" she says extremely fast due to excitement; gosh, I love her so much.

"Sounds perfect! Well, you make everything look perfect, Sky," I smile and hug her.

"Awww hun! You're too sweet! Alright! Let's hop to it!" she says putting me in a stool.

I feel her apply foundation onto my skin to make my face appear even and after finishing powder. She puts more make up on for this night rather than the Grammy's because I will be dancing, and my make up needs to stay perfect. She takes about an hour to completely finish the make up and after, hands me the lipstick she used.

"Present from me!" she smiles, "it's a great color for you! Have fun tonight, darling!"

She spins me around and I look at myself in the mirror. I look like a completely transformed Terissa.

"Sky, I love it! Thanks so much," I give her a hug.

"I'm glad, dear. Danny's here! I should get going, bye," she blows me a kiss and opens the dressing room door for Danny.

"Darling!" Danny smiles when he walks in, "My! Skylere did a beautiful job on your make up!"

    "Thanks," I blush.

Danny looks great as always, with his super cool apron and purple-streaked hair. Today, he's wearing a blue and white plaid shirt with skinny jeans (not too tight) and blue Nikes. He looks super casual, but still amazing.

"Can I see what you're wearing tonight!?" he asks politely.

I pick up and show him my dress I hung up in my dressing room earlier.

"Gorgeous! Great choice!" he says clapping his hands together, "I don't want to take too much attention away from your dress, so
I'm going to do a sleek ponytail with a unique hint to it! I'm going to wrap silver, silk cord around the pony tail to have a fancier affect! It's called a 'Roman Ponytail', but we can use it for this Greek-style dress!"

"That's definitely unique!" I add in, excitedly.

He sits me down on the stool and starts his work. He pulls my soft hair up into a ponytail first, making sure all loose hairs and bumps are smoothened out. He sprays hair spray and applies mousse on the top of my head, so the loose hairs won't stick up and so the lumps don't come back later in the evening. He ties my hair with a brown elastic matching my hair color, so the color of the hair tie blends in with my hair. He adds a spray and explains it's for "extra shine and long lasting sleekness".

After, he ties the silk cord next to the hair tie and pulls it through the hair tie to secure it. He leaves two strands of equally length, silk cord dangling on each side of the ponytail and begin to twist them around the ponytail making X shapes. When he reaches the end, he wraps the cords around the tip of my ponytail, tying a knot in the back and then cutting the extra off.

"Danny! This looks phenomenal!" I exclaim.

"You look phenomenal!" he smiles and pulls me into a hug, "have fun tonight, Terissa. You deserve it."

"Thank you, Danny," I whisper into his ear; he pulls away from our hug and waves goodbye as he walks out the door.

    ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

It's 6PM and Prom starts at 7. Oliver should be coming any minute now. I slip on my dress slowly and walk down the stairs to my parents and brother. They all smile brightly when they see me.

"Wow, Terissa!" my brother gawks; he's going to Junior Prom too, so he's wearing his tux.

    What a creep... I thought.

My parents seem to be getting along today, but I only think it's because they didn't want to ruin my evening. They look happy, though. I haven't seen them smile at each other for a while... but, maybe things are back to normal! I hope.

"Well! I gotta go! I have to pick up my date!" Ty calls and rushes to his car.

"Honey! You look fantastic!" my dad says pulling me into a hug.

I still love him, because he is my dad, but I hate it when him and mom argue. I don't know what they argue about. There really isn't anything... Is there?

I shake my head and smile, Stop worrying, Terissa. Everything will be fine.

A black limousine pulls up in front of my house and my mom freaks out.

"Quick! Get back up the stairs, honey! You need to make an entrance," she says pushing me to go up.

I roll my eyes at her and smile, I love my mom.

I stand at the top of the staircase waiting for my mother to open the door for Oliver.

"Oliver! Hi sweetie! How are you!" my mom greets; she and my dad really like Oliver.

"I'm great, Mrs. Bennett! Where's the special girl?" he says excitedly.

"Oh, you know, getting ready. She'll be down in a couple of moments," my mom lied a little.

"I'm coming!" I call from the top of the staircase and begin walking down (cue slow motion affect).

I get down midway and see my parents smiling brightly and Oliver in shock. He's holding a box in his hand and looking super gorgeous as always. He's wearing a classic black tux with white dress shirt and a silver bow tie.

I finally reach the bottom of the staircase and I just stand there awkwardly gripping the rail, "Hi."

"Hi Riza," he smiles and extends his arm out; I clutch onto his arm and began walking toward the front door, "I have something for you."

I open the box revealing a corsage, an off-white flower matching my dress without clashing it, "I love it!"

"Shall we?" he says walking toward the door.

"WAIT KIDS! Pictures!" my mother shouts pulling her camera out of her pocket.

I roll my eyes and pretend to pout, "Really, mom?!"

    "Relax! It's fine!" Oliver reassures.

She snaps several pictures of us and we walk outside to the limousine.

"You look so beautiful," Oliver whispers and plays with my hair.

"Don't ruin it! Danny worked really hard on it!" I pretend to get angry, "but you look amazing as ever."

"And tonight will be even more amazing," Oliver smiles.

    Indeed it will.

    ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

We arrive at the hotel five minutes past seven and walk into the ballroom our Prom is being held. We walk under the archway and are asked to take pictures, which we do.

The room is extremely classy, with black table cloths and silky white napkins. The disco ball is spinning around creating a bright light affect in the room and the music is blaring.

    "Wow," I say breathlessly.

"It's different isn't it?" Oliver smiles.

    "Very," I smile, "let's dance!"

We dance the night away together, with no one else, just having fun for ourselves. No one around us mattered. We didn't care what anyone thought of us. We were happy. Just us two.

    "I love you," Oliver whispers.

"I love you too," I smile and kiss him in the middle of the dance floor, while slow dancing to "A Thousand Years".

Can it get more perfect than this?

    End of Flashback

    ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

"That's that," I say after my short story.

"I'm sorry..." Preston puts his hand over mine, "I shouldn't butt into your business."

"You shouldn't, but thanks," I laugh and open my hand to let his fingertips through, surprising Preston.

"You confuse me, Terissa," Preston randomly says.

"How so?" I respond widening my eyes innocently.

"Sometimes you hate me, sometimes you're nice, sometimes you're innocent and sometimes you tease me... like right now," he says scooting his chair closer to me.

"What?" I smirk, "Can't handle it?"

"No!" he protests embarrassed at his comment, "I just-."

"Well," I cut him off and move closer to him, bringing my lips to his ear and whisper, "you can just call me a normal teenage girl."

"Well maybe, if I get to know you better, I'd know how you act," he whispers back to me, his warm breath tickling my ear.

I move myself back a little, his face now being visible. We're practically centimeters apart; I feel his short breath on my face.

"Why?" I smirk, "Am I too much to handle?"

"No, I just don't know what to say around you. I don't know your mood. I get so tongue-tied just looking at you. I never know what to say," he says moving his face closer to mine.

I move my face closer and closer until I feel our noses bump together. His lips come closer and closer to mine until they slightly touch.

I pull away and get up to leave, but Preston is holding my hand with hurt eyes, "Please don't run away... You'll only confuse me more."

"I can't do this, Preston," I whisper, "I'm not ready."

"Then I'll wait as long as I have to," he states simply.

"I'm sorry that I'm confusing," I say sadly.

"I don't mind, really! It kind of makes you more fun to be around. Everyday is something new," he smiles.

"I guess you can call me spontaneous," I laugh, feeling better about myself.

"See?! That's something else I learned about you today!" Preston exclaims.

Preston kindly pays for our mid-afternoon snack and takes us to a playground in the park. Patterson Park.

"This is the park," I say slowly.

"Oh..." he covers his mouth remembering, "we can go to a different one, if you'd like."

"You know what? No. We're going to have fun..." I hear myself say; I smile at Preston reassuring.

"Just so you know, this is an extension of our hang out," he smirks.

    "You're lucky I love playgrounds," I laugh.

I run up the steps of the huge play structure in the park as Preston follows me.

"What are you doing?" he asks running after I pick up my pace.

"I'm running away from you!" I giggle and sprint off the slide.

I continue to run around the playground with Preston following me.

"This feels like elementary school," he laughs chasing after me.

I laugh with him and he slowly starts to catch up, "You can't catch me!"

"Yes I can!" he shouts and sprints towards me.

He wraps his arms around my stomach from behind and stops me.

"Got you," he whispers in my ear still holding me.

I turn around and give him a real hug, "Thanks for hanging out with me today."

"Can we hang out again tomorrow?" he asks.

"Of course!" I smile looking slightly at him.

"Terissa... I-," he starts to say.

    BRRRRRIIIINNNNGGGGG

My phone rings cutting him off, "I'm so sorry, but I have to take this."

He lets me go and I stand there answering my phone, "Hi mom! You're home early today!"

"Where are you, honey? I thought you'd be home by now," she asks.

"My friend and I are working on a project. My friend treated me to Bruxie and the park," I respond.

"Oh! You made a new friend?! What's her name?" she squeals!

    "Mom," I hiss quietly, "it's a guy."

"Oh..." she says slowly, "are you okay with dating now? What's his name? How old is he?"

"We're just friends, mom! His name's Preston and he's my age," I laugh at my mother.

I see Preston smirking as I'm talking on the phone; I mouth "stop it" to him and smile.

"We'll talk about details later. Want to invite him over for dinner? He did pay for your snack at Bruxie," she insisted.

"I'll ask him," I tell her and turn to Preston, "My mom wants to know if you want to come over for dinner."

"Oh! Well, I don't want to be rude," he says politely.

"She insists; she wants to meet you! You're my first friend since..." I say.

"I don't want to get in your way," he rejects.

"Preston. I want you to come, okay? Please?" I plead.

    "For you," he smiles.

I smile back at him and put the phone to my ear, "He's coming, mom!"

"Okay! Dinner's at 7! Don't be late, bye sweetie," she says.

"Bye mom, love you!" I end the call.

"Are you sure you don't mind?" he asks.

"Of course not! Shouldn't you tell your parents that you're not coming home for dinner?" I ask.

"Eh. They probably won't be at my home for dinner anyway. I usually have it by myself. It's good to have a dinner with other people for once," he says with slightly hurt eyes.

"In that case," I say grabbing his hand and pulling him to his car, "you can come over any time you want."

    ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

We go back to school, so I could drive my car back home. Preston insisted that he could give me a ride tomorrow, but he lives on the other side of town. We get to my house at around 6:15, smelling the delicious dinner my mom is making.

"Mom! I'm home!" I call when walk into the door.

I hear footsteps from the kitchen and suddenly my mom appears, "Hi honey! Hi! You must be Preston!"

"Hi Ms. Lennox, it's very nice to meet you," he says politely.

"Please! Call me Lavender! Or Lav is fine too," my mom smiles.

"Thank you for inviting me over for dinner. You have a lovely home," he smiles back at her.

"Thank you! Well! Anyway! I should be going back to make dinner, you two kids have fun. Dinner's in 45 minutes! We'll talk more then! Don't be late!" she squeals.

"Do you need help, mom?" I ask.

"No! I'm fine! Go have fun," she flicks her hand motioning us to go.

As we walk up the stairs to my room, Preston smiles, "Your mom is truly amazing."

"I love her to death. She's my best girl friend," I say smiling back.

"She seems really happy," he says as we get to my room.

"I just haven't had a friend, since.. You know," I say, "I think she's happy that I made a friend."

I open the door to my room, "Sorry, it's a little messy right now. I wasn't expecting guests."

"Your room is awesome!" Preston smiles.

I guess he's right. My walls are still light blue with blue curtains and blue bed sheets. My room is pretty large, so I have a sitting area, with a couch, a comforter and my life-size teddy bear I sit on for reading. Next to that is my mini-refrigerator filled with my favorite snacks like chocolate, apple sauce, and some drinks. My walls are bare, because I took all the pictures of me and Oliver off, but maybe I'll put something there soon.

"We can sit over here," I motion to the seating area.

"You have a ton of doors!" he laughs.

"Yeah. Walk in closet door, bathroom door, bedroom door and balcony door," I point to each one.

I sit next to him awkwardly on the couch not knowing what to say now. He looks a little nervous too and keeps his mouth shut.

"I'll be right back, I'm going to change out of my school clothes," I awkwardly get up and walk into my closet.

I change into my 'lounging clothes', my black track outfit. I walk through to the bathroom through the connecting door and check my face. I brush through my hair a little and smile at myself in the mirror.

"Sorry I took a while," I walk back into the bedroom with Preston not in sight.

Where did he go? I ask myself.

I walk around the upstairs and downstairs with Preston no where in sight. I walk back up to my room and sigh.

He's probably gone, I thought as I sit on my brown teddy bear.

I look out my window and hear a deep voice talking.

"Ugh! I'm so stupid! I never know what to say to her! Gosh. I just humiliate myself!" I hear Preston taking to himself on my balcony, "She probably thinks I'm an idiot and will never hang out with me again."

I smile realizing he's still here and that he felt the same way I did. I pretend to sit on the couch and wait for him to come back inside.

"Preston? Where are you?" I call.

"Oh! Here, Terissa! I just needed fresh air," he lies.

"DINNER!" my mother calls from down the stairs.

We run down the stairs and sit down next to each other at the table.

"I made baked Mac and Cheese and meatloaf, is that okay, Preston?" my mother asks.

"Sounds great! Thanks again for inviting me over," he smiles politely.

"Help yourself! You too, Terissa," my mom smiles at me.

The diner consists of talking about schoolwork and mom asking where he moved from and such. What sports he plays, hobbies, basically her being a complete stalker, but I know she just wants me to be safe.

"Thank you for the delicious meal," Preston smiles, "I haven't had dinner with others for a really long time."

"Come back anytime! Really! You're welcome," she smiles back at him, "Ter, can you go heat up the apple pie I made yesterday? Put it in the oven for 10 minutes on 250."

"Okay, mom," I walk away leaving Preston with my mother.

    ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

    Preston's POV

"I'm glad you're here, Preston," Lavender says to me, "I'm happy that my daughter is becoming herself again. I'm sure she told you about..."

"Yeah... She never told me what happened, but I'm going to wait until she's ready to tell me," I respond politely.

"I better not tell. Besides, you'd probably rather hear it from her than me," she smiles, "Anyway, I hope to see more of you. You don't realize how special you are."

"I'm special?" I ask, extremely surprised.

"I was sure Ter would never talk to guys ever again after Oliver, but you're here. I'm not losing hope on her," she smiles.

I hear the oven beep and we stop talking; Terissa walks out with a warm apple pie.

After dessert, Terissa walks me to my car and sits inside with me, "Thanks for coming."

"I had a great time this afternoon and at dinner," I smile, "I'd love to come over again, one day."

"My mom seems to like you," she laughs.

"I hope so," I laugh with her, "I should get going though."

"Oh, yeah," she says with a sad tone, "bye, Preston."

"Bye, Terissa," I say and smile at her when she gets out of my car.

I turn the car on and begin to pull out.

KNOCK KNOCK. I feel a banging on my window. Terissa.

I roll my window down and laugh, "What's up?"

"I forgot to give you this," she pulls me into a hug, giggles, and then runs back into her house.

    She's so damn cute.

    ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

    (Back to Terissa's POV)

I shut the front door and lean against it, smiling for a minute or two. I walk back into the kitchen where my mom is sitting at the kitchen table drinking coffee.

    "Did he leave?" she asks.

"Yeah. He just left," I say, smiling.

"Ter, do you like him?" she questions.

"UHHH NO MOM! WE'RE JUST FRIENDS! NO WAY!" I protest.

"Yeah, right," she smirks at me, "I see the way he looks at you and you look at him. I'm not stupid, honey."

"What do you mean! Ugh mom!" I pout at her, "I'm going to my room!"

"There's my Terissa," she laughs as I run up the stairs.

Do I like Preston? No. Yes. Maybe? Ugh.

I don't know. I guess I confuse myself with my feelings too. I don't know how I feel about Preston right now.

But I do know one thing.

    That I'm happy.

    For real.
