  10. Swallowing with difficulty I blurted out “W-What?”

Siegfried walked to the back of the room by the bar. “Don’t get the wrong idea,” he said brusquely. “I just don’t want your bad mood to spoil my yacht trip!” His ears looked suspiciously red and he didn’t turn to face me for a while.

At last he seemed to have composed himself and began pouring a dark red wine into a glass. Just then a faint voice rang out from outside. I barely heard it as it was almost carried away by the wind. Looking out of the glass windows that encased us I saw a boat approaching from the starboard side.

The boat was white with a light blue trim. On the side facing us was a flowing script of the same color that read Darwin’s Whistle. Out on the deck in a luxurious parka with a fur hood was Prince Orcello, waving his arms wildly at us with an enormous grin upon his face.

    “Princess!” he was shouting.

A blonde man was struggling to hold him back from the railing. It seemed Prince Orcello was all but ready to leap from his boat to Prince von Adler’s. Siegfried’s expression turned sour and he slammed his drink rather heavily upon the bar before making his way past me.

Siegfried opened the door and stepped out into the brisk December air. I shivered a little, moving closer to the fireplace. Van poorly concealed his discontentment when Siegfried faced him. The two Princes seemed to be having a conversation and I watched them from inside the enclosed space.

Siegfried remained composed but seemed to be very irritated, and Van was smiling although it didn’t go to his eyes. I felt tense suddenly and stood up, walking out onto the deck as well.

“There’s no need to interfere, Prince Orcello,” Siegfried was saying.

“Really, I should save her from a dragon like you,” Van muttered and my ears went red. His downcast eyes connected with his blonde servant and he gave a dramatic sigh. “I suppose I have no choice then. I will see you at port, and you can let me take you on another date,” Van said with a twinkling laugh.

Siegfried whirled around to look at me accusingly at the word ‘date’. I froze up and couldn’t look him in the eyes. Was Van referring to the dinner?

“Onward!” Van exclaimed wildly and pointed forward. His boat sped off then past Siegfried’s, journeying into the distance.

Siegfried then grabbed my arm suddenly and pushed me into the outer wall of the enclosure. His expression was very serious and I felt a pang of fear. Staring straight at me he opened his mouth to speak. “What date is he talking about?”
