  8. “How unfair Prince Kirtak, monopolizing my date for the night,” said a voice in a surprisingly whiny tone. I looked over my shoulder and saw a blue uniform approaching us. “In any case I was going to invite her out tomorrow on my yacht. Why should you get to take her?”

“Orcello,” Ian said rather curtly. His eyes flashed as he regarded Van.

“Your highness…” said a shrill wheedling voice. I blanched as I saw an older woman hurry up to us, tied tightly into a dress with an overly made-up face. I recognized her as Mme. Malvow. Van went white as well and turned to regard her with a poorly hidden pained expression.

Ian took this opportunity to lead me away and handed me a glass of champagne from a passing waiter’s tray. “To a wonderful day tomorrow,” he said and clinked glasses with me. He drank a little and then pushed his hair back from his face with a sigh.

    “Is something wrong?” I asked.

Ian’s deep brown eyes widened slightly at my question but he shook his head, pulling the mask down until it hung around his neck. Then his lips pursed slightly as if he were about to speak but he stopped himself. He seemed worried about something.

“Can’t you tell me?” I said at the same time as he spoke.

“Are you involved with—” he began. We both stopped talking. I paused and Ian sighed again.

A man in black approached then, his boots clicking on the dance floor. He came to stand next to Prince Kirtak and he regarded our close proximity with calculating eyes. It was Siegfried and like usual he looked rather cross.

“With the commoner again,” he muttered. Raising his voice he addressed Prince Kirtak. “Princess Ophelia has arrived.”

At this announcement, Prince Kirtak’s back stiffened and his eyes trailed to the side. I followed his gaze and saw the same woman I had seen during the parade. Her frail figure was dressed in a beautiful blue gown that touched the floor, with long sheer sparkling fabric draped over the top. Her brown hair was down this time, curling around her shoulders. Despite her fragileness she was stunning, and it made her seem all the more dainty and petite.

Prince Kirtak had a strange look on his face and then he turned to me. “Excuse me Ms. Werner,” he said almost apologetically and set his champagne flute upon a tray, walking away.

I watched him go and felt a strange pain in my chest. That was his fiancée, a reminder of the difference between royalty and commoners like me. As much as I hated it, Siegfried was right in that respect. Ian touched the woman’s shoulder gently and she turned, her eyes widening prettily as she recognized him. Then an impeccable smile crossed her lips and the two of them began to talk.

Siegfried looked down at me, his mouth a thin line. “I thought I told you to stay away from Prince Kirtak.”

Upset and confused I blurted out before thinking, “Don’t tell me what to do!” I gasped and covered my mouth with my hand, realizing what I had just done.

Siegfried’s eyes were wide in shock, the first time I had seen this expression on him. “Did you just… talk back to me?” he said in disbelief.

I stared at him in trepidation, wondering what he’d do to me. He was royalty, and I just spoke to him in such a careless manner! Would I be banished? Jailed? What was going to happen to me now?
