I think we should write in third person. That seems better for this story.
Use LOTS of detail, and try to work in the details without being too obvious. Take your time, and don't rush things. Describe EVERYTHING.

We shouldn't have two of the same animal… I should probably change my animal. A polar bear would only be good in the snow

I CALL A POLAR BEAR IM COMPLETELY OBSESSED WITH THEM
And later on, they'll discover that they can control that animal and/or turn into one
And all of them found the statue because they have the power of that animal in their blood or whatever
We shouldn't do mythical animals…
And that animal is, like, their spirit animal
I think they could be gold statues, but each character has a different animal
