I'm not quite sure why nouns are gendered; I never sort of questioned it. It's something I'll have to look into. Kefo's speculation sounds like it...

Nouns are gendered in German, and cat is a female one. "Die* Katze" Even if it is a male cat. *pronounced dee. it's the feminine "the"
