  1. I know it's not required but I did take pictures throughout the process so I went ahead and made a collage of those ❤️ I also included my reference photograph (again, that I took!)

  2. This- look I tried, lol. This is not my art style at all nor am I well versed in digital art, but I wanted to try something new to convey my idea and this is what I had time for. I'm going for participation and creativity, not talent. 😂 I'll put it in a spoiler as to not burden you all with having to see it 😂

Inspired by the ballet "Carnival of Animals". What if the mermaid ballerina suddenly did transform into her animal on stage mid performance?

  14. Japanese Folklore

    Zennyo Ryūō
Is known as the Goddess of Dragon. Her spirit resembles positivity and good weather. Although, there another form of her that is believed to embody negativity and vengance.

    Hannya
Is known to be a female version of a demon. Usually played by women in theaters with a traditional Japanese mask. The first form of her is believed to be neutral as she can transform back to human. The second form is evil but is weak to the chanting of monks/anything holy. The final form is much darker. It is believed to be the most powerful and evil entity.

I advise you to listen to songs by Amie Doherty: "Stranger in Town" and "The Art of Seduction" when looking at these drawings. I was inspired by it when I made them, somehow gives it life.

More about these two Yonkais can be found on the internet. My description was a summary of what I found from my research.

Not every song was meant to save you.

    ...

Mermaids haunt the legends of countless cultures whispered of in Europe, Latin America, Asia, and Africa.
Cloaked in beauty and shrouded in mystery, they drift between myth and nightmare.

To some, they offer salvation... but to others, they are the last thing seen before the deep drags them under.

Allure is their weapon. Choice is their curse. And when they decide, mercy is never promised.

Made using watercolours and gouache paint.

" The Moon Callers who walked the forests of old Ireland , The Man-Wolves of Ossory ."
    -- Irish folklore

A creature of fierce bloodlust, the Man-Wolf of Ossory was prevalent in ancient Irish folklore and superstition.

According to Patrick Weston ("The Wonders of Ireland" , 1911):

"In the dim days of yore , the people of the kingdom of Ossory had the power of changing themselves into wolves , whenever they pleased.

... During the whole time that an Ossorian lived as a wolf , his own proper body remained at home , as if he were dead . And , when about to make a wolf of himself , he gave strict orders to his friends not to disturb the body--for if it were removed , he was never able to regain his own shape . He would be doomed to remain a wolf for the rest of his natural life ... "

As one of the more obscure elements in Irish folklore, I wasn't able to find out, definitively, what genuinely set it unique and apart--from the werewolves that we've come to know (thanks in part to mainstream media).

My research, then, led me to an album cover designed by Robin Harris. As it were, that album ("Wolf Hex") contained a song entitled "Wolves of Ossory" . With his work as reference, I adapted the result to depict the Man-Wolf's transformation (hence, the human limbs).

As my preferred mediums, I utilised cold-pressed watercolour paper; as well as a variety of fountain pen inks.

  17. Week 2: Folklore

I did some research into what may have been believed generations ago on my mom's side. This is what I found, and what was used as my inspiration for my illustration:

    Result:

I painted an eerie night scene with glowing blobs, which are the "Erdlichts" described above. A human figure walks along the path, but an Erdlicht reaches out to grab them!

    Materials and Process:

I used cold press 140lb black watercolor paper, which I'm fairly new to but is pretty fun to experiment with.

I mostly used a few different gouache colors, but I also mixed in some acrylic interference paint to yield an iridescent effect. Last, I used a little bit of charcoal pencil and silver color pencil to add a few more touches of brightness and shadows to give it a bit more depth.
