Please!! dont make the remake if you wont be staying true to the original!! Im going to just console my heart by looking through my fav collection of Ariel And heres for Prince Eric looking like our PM Mr. Trudeau
Now please dont take me wrong, Halle is very beautiful but ive seen my fav disney princess with a set image in mind since forever. Prince Eric is from Denmark i believe, so no doubt the whole story takes place in the ocean around Europe. Its like trying to cast Pocahontas as a white actress, you just can’t. I will definitely give it a chance but im still in shock....
True tbh, I'd take white ariel over new age blackriel anyday. Shouldn't change the classics. Halle has an amazing voice but they should cast someone that fits the animation..
There are black people in Europe. Also Ariel technically lives in the ocean, so she could be from anywhere. Her father's the king of the sea so I presume she's got relatively free reign of majority of the ocean.
Its not being racist its being true to the classic, next thing you know they will start changing the genders of the classics...and making them LGBTQ+. I would definitely support the pride but they need to keep the classics as they are, and start making new stories into movies to include everyone!
🤷♀️ Heh. I hate little mermaid story. Its very tragic compared to the version of Disney 😂. So I'm not bothered at all
While I do understand your attachment to the original,- especially with something like Disney, which has a tender childhood nostalgia- we will always have the classics. In my opinion, remakes are intended to be a different version of the same story. In this case, her race doesn't even affect the story so it's a minor difference, in the grand scheme of the film. We will always have redheaded, blue eyed Ariel. A different version of her doesn't get rid of the old one so much as offers a different perspective on her.
Disney trying way too hard to get with the times, with the live actions and new looks. Tbh it doesn’t effect my life in any way so I don’t care all that much but I do think they should have kept Ariel’s look the same. Just because you CAN change things doesn’t mean you SHOULD change them. They coulda made a whole new mermaid story with the new look, nothing attached to Ariel in any way. But again, oh well
I still couldnt get over their casting choice for Jaffar in Aladdin..... And now with this, i feel that was nothing....
It might not be that bad, but it definitely isn't good. I love that "her voice is nice" talking point. Was that ever an acceptable excuse for whitewashing? She might have red hair and blue contacts... Whiteface? Honk honk. She is a mermaid from the ocean, not from Denmark... but the images of humanoid creature in Danish would have had a familiar skin tone unless explicitly stated otherwise. Why would Disney deny that fact? And there is a general trend in which those who worked hard, toiled in the sun, and did manual labour would have tans while the rich and dignified classes would have had fairer skin from being inside more. The inverse of modern western views of skin tan in which tans reflect a healthy lifestyle and perhaps holidays. A mermaid is sheltered from the sun by the water. Ariel is the princess of the mermaids, daughter of Poseidon. Sheltered absolutely, her shelter is a major motif in the little mermaid. "what does it matter?" you might not have known that it mattered or that there was any reason for these things but this is why we aim to preserve history and the stories from our past. We may not know the significance of them at first, but someone might find the significance eventually and take lessons from these things.
It's really not like that at all. Pocahontas' story is almost entirely about her race whereas I can't remember anyone in The Little Mermaid referencing how white they all were. Anyway, I think it's cool. And my mother named me after the little mermaid so if I can get over it, you can, too 🌝
Also quick add, pretty sure mermaids are usually described as pale or even tending towards translucency because of the lack of a need for melanin. Please @ me so I can be bothered to look for sources.
If it was just pigmentation, they coulda cast a tanned European but that wasn't their intention, and it wasn't just some overlooked factor either.
