Where The River Meets The Memories
    By: Adrinnea Wind

    Preface
    Jay

I'm running when I hear a thunderous sound. It feels like it travels through me, shocking my bare feet. I trip and stumble as a high pitched scream cuts the boom. "MIA," my voice cracks with tears as I scream her name. No answer. I manage to get on my feet without tumbling back over.

I sprint blindly over the well-worn path, my bare feet stinging when I land on a stone. As I round the corner hiding my beloved home I kick a tree root. The pain sears through me like acid. I keep moving. I run straight into the clearing. I pause and touch my face. When I pull my hand away it's wet with tears.

My face streaked with tears in the ruin of my home I scream at the sky, “ Why? What did I do?” My voice is lost in claps of thunder. The sky is split open by a thin yellow crack. It lights up my destroyed home for a second. Long enough to see the single grey feather in the middle of what used to be my room. I fall to my knees, glass and metal digging through my dirty skin.

Carefully I pick up the grey feather. The feather of a white hawk, the animal on my family crest. A laugh chokes in my throat. They aren't all dead. One left me a message signaling that they are safe. I run my fingers over the tip I can feel a slight indentation. I use the very tip of my pinky to feel what it is. A zagged "M" covers it. I sigh, at least Mia is safe and that's all that matters.

    Preface
    Mia

I still at Jay's table with my head on my elbows talking to his mom.
"Kaylee, I am thinking about cutting off my hair," I say running my hand through the blonde waves off my head.
"Mia! You mustn't. It's beautiful," she responds with surprise, almost dropping one of the china dolls in her hand.
"Your right I won't," I say lying. "Where's Jay? I thought you said he was only going to see if the hen's eggs hatched."
"Hmmm... he must have gotten distracted."
    "I'll go check."

I get up and smooth my dress. As I walk outside I hear the sharp "clink" of glass breaking. Realizing Kaylee dropped one of the family's heirlooms I turn to go help her mend it. But the ground starts rolling with a clang. The house starts to crumple. I grab the frame of the house with one hand while I fish out a grey feather.

I can already see the horses in the distance with the blood-ravaged riders aloft. My veins are filled with the molten lava of hatred towards Jay's family. They turned us in for nothing! I can't stay and I can't go for Jay.

I let the feather flutter onto the ground and run. It's to late a cage falls onto me landing on my left hand. I crumple under the pain. A man overly dressed in the way knights do comes close and knees down. He sticks a hand through the holes in the wire. I bite and kick at it. His face swells with anger and recoils to strike. I am ready and yank my hand from under the edge of my cage. Yelping against the I pull a knife from out of my bag. I have it out when the man sticks his through the slats again. He howls in pain as it punctures his skin between his thumb and forefinger. A scratchy voice "We got a fighter," comes from behind me. Before I can turn around I feel the needle go into my left shoulder. I crumble the ground and fade into a world of shadows.
