  18. Neither. The stairs aren't actually there. It's one of those lifelike paintings, and the cat just happens to be in the right place. ?

  20.  Worth a guess. If I had to pick one of the two options though, I'd say down. Just looking at the shadows, and the top of the stairs looks more ceiling than floor. To get such a sharp rise in the cats behind it would have to be going down. If it were going up, you'd have to be standing practically on top of the cat to get that kind of angle.
