INTRODUCING... ?THE WRITING DUELS [CONTEST]? By: Sammi and Shannon Note: All times and days mentioned are EST. HOW IT WORKS: 1) Sign up on this thread! Just say: 'I want to enter this contest' and we will put you on the list! ***SIGN UP ENDS ON SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 7TH, 2013 (two weeks).*** 2) On Sunday, September 8th, we will pair up those that signed up FAIRLY. We are on FF regularly, so we know most writers' levels and skill. ***You will not know who you are up against.*** 3) On the same day, one of us will inbox you a word. Based on themes of that word, write a ONE SHOT strictly on your own unique ideas! ***THE ONE SHOT WILL BE DUE SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 28TH.*** 4) For each duel, the makers of the contest will create a thread for the two duelers. The thread will be titled as such: YOURWORD [Writing Duels: R1] Post your one shot there! Please try posting your one shot between September 26-28. It's a better surprise to see both of your perspectives of the word! 5) The makers of the contest will judge both of your one shots based STRICTLY on this criteria: Writing Style (organization, sentence structure, etc) Grammar Spelling Originality How Well the Word is Portrayed in the Story Interest Details Both judges score each listed above on a scale of 1 to 5 (1 being poor and 5 being perfect). The points from both judges will be added together to form a final score. The highest number of points is 70. (There may be decimal points.) 6) The winner of each duel will be announced on the main thread (this one) all at the same time on Saturday, October 5th. These winners are eligible to move onto the FINAL BATTLE! 7) The contestants for the Final Battle will all receive the same word and will post on the "Final Battle Thread". ***Same rules apply. Two weeks for completion (Saturday, October 19th). Please try posting between October 17-19.*** 8) The winner will be posted a week later on Saturday, October 26th and prizes will be given! ***All participants receive a gift! The winner (SnapBack) and runner-up (crabs) get a participation gift (TBD) in addition to their winning gift!*** TIPS/ RULES: Don't be afraid to enter! So what if you're new to FF? Beginning and experienced members have much to learn! It's not about winning or losing . Don't tell each other what your word is! It'll spoil the fun of it being a surprise! Readers are ALLOWED to comment on your stories, but the judges will not. Be kind to all writers and one shots submitted. This is friendly competition; show good sportsmanship. Your dictionary might be your BFF for this contest, especially if you don't know what your word means! One submission per writer (this is self explanatory). No asking ANYONE for ideas or help, including the makers of the contest. If someone asks you for an idea, don't give them one . The most cliché rule of all time: BE CREATIVE! Seriously. This rule is boring because it's cliché and so is cliché writing! Be creative! Questions to think about when writing: Should you include the word in your story or should I base the whole story on the word? Is this original? Is this interesting? Is this confusing? Remember to proofread! Questions? Message one of us! We'll gladly explain something further to you! GOOD LUCK AND HAVE FUN WRITING!
Wait so Fan fiction is gonna be filled with these stories. And it's gonna dump all the actually stories down. that's not very fair to the writers of those stories.
Yeah, that's actually what I was wondering today. I'll talk to Shannon about it when she comes back. Maybe more than two people can share a thread.
We think separate threads are better because otherwise all the stuff gets jumbled up and no one knows who they're up against. :3 We'll probably make two pairs per thread, or three, depending on how many people join. It's in the works, but don't worry, we won't clog up fan fiction. It's sorta natural for writing contests to make a lot of threads, though. The entries can be treated like regular one-shots by readers and some people may even wish to continue their entry into a full-blown story on a new thread.
Or post the stories on this thread so it makes it more organized. Everyone here works hard on their stories.
Posting everything on here will be confusing two or three pairs to a thread sounds like a good idea. Will people be given numbers corresponding to the other in their pair?
@tash Just words, but numbers might be a good idea… and you get your word once sign-up ends, after we make pairs.
We're dealing with that. We'll try to convince someone else to join, but if not there'll a threesome (but we're keeping this PG). Two people in the threesome will move onto the final round and the word will be easier (with more possible interpretations) to account for the number of people. SIDE NOTE: If a pair writes about basically the same thing, the first writer will receive more originality points.
Since we're matching people by skill level, could you possibly write a short one-shot so we can judge your skill?
