I had never seen him around before. In fact it was rare for me to notice anyone except the group of friends I had known for years and was comfortable with. No one outside that group talked to me and I didn't talk to them. That's why it was strange for me the first time he ever spoke to me.

"Hannah. Do you have a pencil I could borrow?"

Ryan Sheffield. Eighteen years old. He was blonde, blue eyed and had a handsome face. I didn't recognize him. Was he really in my english class? It was nearing the end of the year and not once had I realized he was in my class.

    "Hannah?"

Flustered I scrambled to find an extra pencil. After moments of looking I found half a pencil. The eraser end was gone and I blushed in embarrassment. Was this the only extra pencil I had?

    "Um..."

I watched as he smiled gently and took the pencil from my hand. "It's fine. Thank you."

I smiled and looked to my neighbor, Katie. She was one of the girls in the group I was always with. She was smiling as if she suspected something.

    "What?" I asked.

"Nothing. Get your stuff out before Mr.Pinder comes," she said and she pointed to my binder.

"You're lying," I said and I took out the English sheets Mr.Pinder had given us for homework.

"I am not," she said and she quickly scribbled in last minute answers.

    "If you say so."

After class, Ryan turned back around and placed the pencil on my desk. "Thanks. See you tomorrow," he said and he got up and exited the room before anyone else.

As he left I immediately turned to Katie. "Hey... has he always been in our class?"

"He's always sat in front of us. Wow. You really don't pay attention, do you?" she laughed.

    "I have never noticed him."

    "And now you do?"

"What do you mean by that?" I asked and I looked away. "I just lent him a pencil. Nothing more."

I watched as Katie rolled her eyes.

    "What?"

    "Nothing."

    "You're lying."

"No. It's just you're so damn cute," she said and she hugged me tightly. "Marry me."

    "No."

She instantly let me go. "Fine," she said and she laughed. "Let's get to the hallway for lunch."

I nodded. The hallway. It was where me and my group of friends hung out every lunch hour. All eleven of us occupied the space and had interesting conversations. I loved it there. It was like taking a break from all the pain and drama at home. It was a place I could just be in peace with my friends.

"We're here!" shouted Katie as we approached the hallway.

"Hey Katie. Hey Hanna," said one of my friends, Holly. Like Katie, Holly was one of my better friends. And often I spent weeks living at her house just like I did with Katie as well.

"Hi Holly," I said quietly and I smiled.

Lunch passed by and I looked at my school schedule. I had spares all afternoon. Did I want to go home? My mother would possibly be home and I didn't want to be there if she was there.

    "What's wrong?"

I turned to see one of my friends, Lailah.

"Oh nothing. I'm just not sure I want to go home now," I said softly. I looked down at the floor and frowned.

"Because your mom might be home?"

    "Yeah..."

"You know. One day you'll have to stand up for yourself and tell her you don't like how she treats you."

"I can't! There's no way I could say that to her... she's my mother."

"I understand that you are a quiet girl and you rarely even open yourself up to us... but you have to."

It was true. I never revealed myself to anyone. I hid from people. Everyday I wore baggy clothing as to not show my figure. I hated people seeing me. And as for my height, I wasn't even give feet tall. I was small and it made it easier to blend in and go unnoticed. I liked it that way.

"Just try," she said. "Anyways, I have class. See you tomorrow."

I watched her leave before I decided I would go home. As I left the school building I could see a cloud if smoke in the air. I covered my mouth and nose with my sweater sleeve and continued on. I would be nearing the "Druggie c
Corner". As I did turn the corner I came face to face with Ryan. He had a cigarette hanging from his mouth.

"Hannah!" he shouted when he saw me. He snatched the cigarette from his mouth and burned it out in the ash tray. He seemed surprised to see me.

    "H-hi..." I said quietly.

    "Where are you going?"

I felt uneasy. My eyes adverted from him to the crowd behind him. There were six of them and three were sharing a joint while the other three were smoking.

    "Home," I said at last.

"Oh I see," he smiled at me.

I looked him over once. I didn't like it. I didn't like people who smoked and did bad things. I looked at the ash tray where he burned out the cigarette and then back at him. I didn't say but the new expression on his face told me he knew I didn't like what he had done.

"Well bye," I said and I turned away from him and walked away.

"Hey! I'll see you tomorrow!" he shouted after me.

He'd see me tomorrow? Why was he acting as though we were friends? Up until now I had no idea he even existed. But knowing that he was one of those people who did bad things, it made me feel a bit fearful of him. But what I didn't understand was the faint sound of my heart beating. It seemed to be going faster than usual.
