The Wall of Silence TL;DR warning This is a thread that is, simply, about child abuse. It will contain pictures and descriptions that some readers may find disturbing and/or triggering. I went to Bristol today (mods no need to lock, I'm not saying where I live ??) and in the Colston Hall, there is a "wall of silence". This aims to raise awareness of child abuse and neglect. This struck me really hard actually, and although most of you won't read this, I hope at least someone will see and that it can help someone. Types This may be obvious, but start from the basics. There are 4 main types of child abuse, all cases can be characterised into one of these types. 1)Physical 2)psychological 3)Sexual 4)neglection Physical Physical abuse often does not occur in isolation, but as part of a mix of behaviors including authoritarian control, anxiety-provoking behavior, and just a general air of (censored). 1 in every 14 children have experienced physical child abuse, and last year, according to the NSPCC, there were 68,000 serious physical concerns and over 100,000 calls to the NSPCC about this type of abuse. Sexual Unfortunately, this kind of abuse is even more common than physical, I am only going to give figures, if you want facts or help, follow me. In the US, it is thought that around 1 in 5 girls, and 1 in 20 boys are subject to sexual abuse. Be aware that sexual abuse covers contact (obvious really) and non-contact (grooming, sexually explicit pictures). psychological Psychological abuse is just as harmful as physical and sexual, and is nearly worse, because of the amount of time needed to heal the wounds and how much young minds can be moulded. Over 50,000 children in the UK are identified as to receiving psychological abuse. neglect This is one of the least known forms of child abuse, simply because some don't even think about it. In Australia, in 2013-14, 198,966 children were suspected of being neglected. Effects There are so many effects of child abuse, physical and mental, here are just a few, some obvious, others not at all. Anxiety, Depression, Dissociation, Difficulty concentrating, Repeated bruising, Poor hygiene, Inappropriate dress, Eating disorders, Discomfort with physical touch. help There are many charities and organisations that are dedicated to this single cause of helping child abuse victims and dealing with calls and concerns. For example the UK has the NSPCC, and the US has the national hotline (1-800-422-4453). All countries have these hotlines and charities, I don't want to miss any, so I won't post all of them, but if you want any help, once again, pm me and I will gladly answer any questions. Final Word Once again, I have included most information (I think) on this thread, but if you have any questions or comments, either pm me, or post on here, and I will answer as soon as I can
This is a well put together thread op. Altho I disagree with emotional abuse being such a small percentage. Mostly on the fact it can over lap with all the other types of abuse. Any of the other abuse types can cause emotional damage.
That graph was taken purely from singular complaints, nearly all the other types will cause psych, but there isn't actually very many PURELY psych complaints.
Correct. I think for the most part it is bcuz many just pass it off, don't believe a child, and/or say its just parenting. So most cases are never known. Not until it is too late. This thread has many great explanations for each type. Sad to say so many go throu this every min of the day. Kinda reminds me of a song I used to love. How many noticed the signs of abuse but had done nothing til it was too late.
Yeah, and to add to this: Do the statistics you looked up even accommodate for unfounded cases, or is this just reported cases—whether evidence is found to prove or disprove the abuse?
It's overall a good thread that does raise awareness about a horrible issue but is it really suitable for a phone app game that's full of tryhard trolls and idiots?
