The Escapees

I was running hard, running for my life. I had to run fast or they would catch me soon. I needed a way out. Think. Matt said there was a tunnel around here. Oh there it is. I squeeze between the cracks and freeze. Slowly they pass by and walk away. We would have to leave again. It was time to say goodbye to our temporary home. I move as quickly and quietly through the tunnel as I possibly can. I need to reach my family as quickly as possible so we can leave. I have the place picked out in my mind as I reach one of the main tunnels. I see Matt waiting there with my family. Now you probably don't understand what I mean when I say family. If you're thinking mom, dad, or grandparents you are wrong. My blood family turned spy and waits for me to be found. My family is all of my friends who were once strangers. We banned together as we all became prey for the government. We hide and move constantly to stay alive. It's not much of a life but at least we're all living well most us are anyways. You probably still don't understand. Somehow someone gained control of the government and overthrew the democracy you think is being run today. Let me be the first to tell you that you're dead wrong. It's not a democracy; it's a dictatorship. Now the government is hunting down my family and I because we are different or special call it what you will. See we have more power than we probably should. Matt is stronger than a heavy weight champ. Sean can turn invisible. Jess can change her appearance. But really it's me they want. I'm their number one target because I have the most power. I have magic. They see me a rarity, a freak, a disease, and they want me dead for it. I ran away from home when I was 10. That's when I figured out I was different from all my 'normal' friends. And that's how I met my family. Most of us that run away aren't as lucky. Most end up dead, but this isn't about them. This is the story of us and our search for freedom.

I run up to Matt and give him a hug. He leans down and whispers in my ear, "Hey Kenzie I missed you." I poke him, but hug him even harder. I untangle myself from him to talk to the crowd that's gathered in the main hall of our tunnel. "We have to move again. The government's hot on our trail. We will leave tonight. It's about a two hour journey, but we have major tunnels dug there so we will have to expand but not by much. Matt you know the way; can you lead the first group now? Ryan can lead the second and Kay the third. I'll take the last group. Let's get moving people!" I finish my speech and go back to Matt's side. I stretch up on my toes to give him a kiss. He bends down and our lips meet for a second. He whispers, "Stay safe, okay? That's all I'm asking." I look him in the eyes and say, "Only if you do." He nods and turns to face his group that had formed around us. "Let's go guys; we have a long journey coming." I watched as he faded into the darkness before going to my own group. We all sat silently around the small fire Sophie had lit. It seemed that in no time night had fallen and it was time to go. I stood up first and silently my group followed. We had been together so long that talking wasn't needed for communication. We headed toward the mountains for a little detour where snowboards were waiting. The trek was slow and silent through the steadily falling snow. I heard a branch snap and I abruptly stopped to look around and take in my surroundings. I saw nothing so we continued on. The mountain was steep and I tripped several times. Soon we reached the peak where the boards sat waiting for us. We climbed on and began our journey down knowing that from here on out it was all going to be downhill. I sighed a breath of relief because in less than an hour I would be in Matt's arms. The way to the new tunnels seemed endless as if time had ceased to exist. The minute I saw trees I leaped off my board running for the tunnel entrance hidden behind the big oak knowing thar instinctively my group would follow. At the entrance I saw Matt and Ryan standing with a lamp. I was so overjoyed to see Matt I ran to him and he leaned down to kiss me. In the two hours apart I realized how much I had missed him and all the joy of seeing him again poured into our kiss. I heard Ryan cough loudly but I ignored him caught up in the kiss. Ryan coughed again and the moment was broken. I rolled my eyes and rested my head on Matt's chest. Now I think you would like to know why Ryan cared so much. Ryan's my brother and he disapproves of Matt. He tries to hide it because I absolutely hate his girlfriend Jess. She thinks she's all that because she can change her appearance. And then she appears out of the tunnel and comes over to hang on Ryan like he's her life source. She puts him on this pedestal like he's a god. He isn't. I love him dearly but he is no where close to a god. Like now. "Kenzie, move it. Bed time," he says. "Now!" he adds when I give him the puppy dog eyes. I pout and walk off to my room and wait for Matt to join me. He takes a while and I drift off to sleep before he comes in.
