  1. Here it is! The long awaited (possibly) sequel to Under the Covers! If you haven't read it, I'd suggest you do before you read this.

    Over the Covers (Update 1)

    My alarm clock screams at me to wake. I groan and smack the damn thing. My reluctant eyelids rise, exposing my overly sensitive eyes to the burn of the sun. The smell of pancakes, eggs, and my lifeblood: bacon, Which Dr. Miller would disapprove of, considering my cholesterol levels, encourage me to rise.

    I lay there for a second or two, aware of the glaringly empty space beside me. Why does she always wake up so early? Then, after struggling for about a minute, I finally get the strength to move. My bones creak and the rusty gears that move them grind painfully to life. I swear I have arthritis. My mechanical body rises eventually, and i find myself staring down at my feet. I need to go to the gym, I'm getting a beer gut.

    I stagger to the bathroom and manage not to seriously injure myself whilst shaving, which is a miracle in itself. I stare at my sorry self in the mirror, wallowing in self pity and watching my vanity wither and die. My age was becoming prevalent in my appearance, and I feared it like a cougar in her mid forties. I was definitely not twenty anymore. I sigh and run a hand through my short, gray tinged hair. Maybe I should start dying it. Get used to it, you're not getting any younger.

    Ten minutes later, my showered and clothed self is scrambling to get my shit together as I scamper downstairs. There, my two pride and joy are taking their sweet time eating. My dilligent wife looks up and smiles. Huh, she usually doesn't smile in the morning. She serves me quickly, which is also abnormal. I usually have to get it myself. Justine is singing some song she learned from school, one where she has to bleep out the curse words. I give her a look, that I hope says "What kind of songs do you listening to?" she grins at me. Her sister, Lydia, is examining the binding of a book with interest, running her fingers along the words, To Kill a Mockingbird, while meticulously forking eggs into her mouth. I sigh. Lydia had always been bookish, and she'd always been silent. Justine was the extrovert, and the musical one, but not the kind of musical I approved of. Her favorite type of music was pop, which was a headache and then some, because she wanted to be just like Cher Lloyd. God help me. Lydia shared my taste in music, preferring classic rock, which was basically extinguished nowadays, the "ear piercing" electronic beats that dominated, the indistinguishable warble, mutilated by auto tune, trying in vain to lip sync correctly.

    I look at my wife, her hair tied up in a messy semblance of a bun, her unmade face scrutinizing a grease stain on the plate she was scrubbing, completely unaware of me watching her, her blue eyes focused, I realized just how beautiful she was. I made a good choice in who I decided to spend the rest of my life with. I looked at Lydia, strands of blonde hair so much like her mother's falling into her face, eyes focused just like her mother's, as she read the book, her eyes scanning slowly over each word.

    I finally finish my breakfast and my wife surprises me again by kissing me goodbye. Justine and Lydia climb into the red minivan my wife drives. She drops them off, goes home to change, and goes to work at the pharmacy. I walk into the nearly empty garage just as they leave. I had never been much of a handyman, and therefor let my wife take care of that. She has a wide array of tools hung on a previously blank cement wall, tools that look like torture devices to me.

    After a very tedious commute in my minuscule car, I get to my workplace, a tall, menacing building, devoid of color and exciting life. My job as an accountant is intensely uninteresting, and I can never find a goddamned parking space. "Hey there Teddy!" Collin greets me as I pass him in the hallway. He's the type of person who's hard not to like. He's so charismatic, I often wonder why he works here, of all places. I might've called him a friend, had he not been so happily annoying all the time. "Good morning." I grumble. He knows I'm not a morning person.

    As I approach my tiny cubical, Linda, my boss, accosts me. "I need you to look these over Theodore." She states blandly, handing me a thick stack of papers, and then strides away, her thick hips swaying as she hands out various tasks. I rub my temples and slide into the cramped space I called my own, and boot up my dinosaur of a computer. Another day, another dollar.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Eventually the clock strikes five and my shift is over. Hallelujah. I think about going straight home, but I decide to have a drink first. The domestic life gets tedious from time to time, and I could use a couple hours to unwind away from the dynamics of family time.
    "Hey Collin, wanna go for a drink?" I ask the person that I trust to get my drunk self home if it comes to that.
    "Sure, why not?" He agrees. Collin usually carpools with Linda, Rodney, and David, all faceless coworkers and my boss.
    As we arrive at the nearest bar, a bar whose name I don't remember, with the young, pretty bartender, and with the cleanest floor I've ever seen in a bar, I immediately order a beer. I watch the football game and talk about the score. The Broncos and the Giants, and all was well, until I heard a voice that sent a spike of adrenaline through me.
    "Hello, Theodor."
  14. Wow! People who actually attempted to figure this out. I'm impressed. The issue of hair color did arise whilst writing this, however, if we planned to reveal who Teddy married in the future, we may as well have not bothered attempting to make it so mysterious.
    However, do remember people can dye their hair.
