    Blue.

That was the colour of her eyes.

    Ice blue.

They were perfect. Whenever you looked at her, they'd be the first thing you'd notice.

Not her indie outfit, not her countless amounts of ear accessories, not her voluminous hair, but her eyes.

    They told of deep secrets, high hopes, great ambition, and the most attractive of all;

    passion.

This is the story of Annabelle Leas.

"Two minutes," I repeated to myself breathlessly as I dashed up the steps into school, gripping the straps on my bag tightly. "Two minutes, otherwise detention... again," I reminded myself once more.

Rounding the corner, I swerved quickly to avoid a dawdling student, shuffling her feet towards homeroom. "You should hurry! You know teachers are extra mean on Mondays!" I called over my shoulder as I slowed down in front of my class.

I slid the door open, checking my watch. Ah, darn. 9:01 am. Tilting my head towards Miss Wilkinson, I watched that grin of hers that I dreaded spread across her face. "Ah, Nick. Just in the nick of time, don't you think?" she said, smiling shrewdly as if she should be given the Comedian of the Year Award.
"You think so, miss?" I replied, purely out of politeness.
"Yes," was the smug reply, and, if it was possible, her shrewd smile got a whole lot more shrewd-er. "In the nick of time to score yourself a detention. I believe--" a pause to check the detention roster she kept, "--Mr Ernwin will see you at 1300 hours on the dot?"
    I sighed. "Yes ma'am."

I took a seat near the middle next to Ethan, my best mate. A sly look and a nod over to the girl on his left.

My eyes shifted and they caught hers, but the moment we made eye contact she shifted them down to the table.

My heart pumped that little bit faster. Quickly I wrote a note on a piece of loose paper I had in my file and passed it over to Ethan.

As discreetly as possible, he wrote back.

    'Who's that?'
'New kid. Recent transfer. Get to know?'

I shot him a 'you idiot' look, but he just shrugged it off. We were about to continue silently arguing when Miss Wilkinson interrupted us. "Mr Ethan, if you would like to join your friend Nicholas in detention, that is fine by me."
"Ah, no miss, that's fine," he replied smoothly, giving her the most innocent face he could muster.

Unfortunately, his innocent is about as innocent as a burglar being caught in the act and trying to say that 'he'd pay them back later'.

Needless to say, he got stuck in detention too. We both grinned at each other, and fist pumped each other while Wilkinson had her back turned.

We were both in this together.

Ethan and I walked down the hall towards detention.

On the way, however, we bumped into the new girl. Ethan, ever the ladies man, gave her the most flirtatious grin he could muster. "Hey there, new chick. I'm Ethan. Do you have a map?"
    I groaned.
"Because I'm lost in your eyes."
    Another groan.

She seemed to appreciate the pick up line and gave him a nervous grin. "Hi..." she said quietly, twiddling her thumbs. Then a sharp intake of breath, and she continued on, "my friends call me Anna."

Ethan smiled. "Nice to meet you, Anna. This is Nick. He's a jerk, so don't bother with him," he said, laughing at his own joke.

What was worse? She giggled. But it's okay, it was a cute giggle. "Dot encourage him," I muttered.

The annoyance nudged me in the side. "Whattsa matter? Can't handle competition?"

I scoffed at him. "Please, I'll take you on any day." And to prove my point, I headlocked him and started messing up his hair. He wriggled about, laughing, telling me to get off, but I wouldn't let up. "Were you gonna say something?" I asked, politely.
    "No!"
"Okay then." I checked my watch with my free hand. 12:59?! "Oh, crud! We gotta go, nice meeting you Anna!" And with that, I broke off in a sprint down the hall.

Ernwin -- or Old Wind, as some call him -- waited outside the door, his mouth turned into a disapproving frown under his white 'stache. "Do you boys know what time it is?" Ethan and I exchanged looks.
"Uh," I checked my watch. "1:03 pm, sir."
"Yes, you are three minutes late! You'll have to make that up, won't you?"
    "Uh, I guess, sir."
"Right, in you go," he shouted at us, pointing with a firm and steady hand to the inside of the classroom.

We both walked inside, easy going and calm. Detention was nice, honestly. I liked it, and to be honest, preferred it to spending time outside of it. Outside you have to deal with social cliques who are over-possessive of their 'territory'.

    In a nutshell;

    I didn't like people.

However, Mr Old Wind didn't come in after us. He still waited. Finally, at a quarter past 1(ish), his patience was rewarded in the form of a girl, her hood pulled up around her face, brown hair trailing down the front of her hoodie.

"Miss, so glad you could join us," Ernwin said with a hint of contempt in his voice.
"Pleasure to be here, sir," she replied, equally as contemptuous.
"Well, if your highness wouldn't mind gracing us all with her presence, would she like to take a seat?"
"Of course, anything for you, my loyal subject."

Our mouths dropped. Did she just...?

With a smirk, she waltzed in, sassy as anything, taking the seat behind me, her bag bouncing on her shoulders. Ethan and I exchanged glances, his eyes twinkling with suppressed laughter. I managed to keep a straight face, and didn't look at her or anything. The last thing I wanted was more trouble.

Old Wind took a seat at the front and proceeded to type (slowly) away at his keyboard, peering through his thick gold rimmed glasses at his computer screen.

The time passed slowly, and the second hand ticked at a turtle's pace.

I didn't mind. I sat in my chair pulling off air guitar riffs, while Ethan sat tapping his feet and bopping his head to some silent melody. Probably one he'd just made up.

After four minutes (that was the total time I was late), Old Wind nodded at us and allowed us out. We picked up our bags and walked timidly out of detention.

About fifteen paces down the corridor, the both of us started laughing uncontrollably. "Oh my god, dude, she totally burned him," Ethan cried, wiping away tears.
"Dude, she's flippin' awesome!" I gasped back as I clutched my stomach.

We managed to get ourselves under control and walk towards the cafeteria to get some lunch. "Bro, she's got at least sixteen minutes to do. Imagine," I muttered. "being stuck with Old Wind for that long. In the same room. Alone."
"I do pity her, not gonna lie," Ethan replied sympathetically.

We walked into the cafeteria and checked the menu. "Oh," Ethan muttered, reading the chalkboard. "Meatloaf. I'll starve today."
    "Yeah, me too."

We walked out again and out into the field. Some kids were already sitting in the bleachers and watching the rugby team practice. "Oi dude." Ethan nudged me. "Isn't that Anna?" He pointed over to a girl all alone under a tree some way away.
"I dunno man, why don't you go check?"
    "Not a bad idea, Nickel."
    "Stop."
    "It's a cool name okay."
    "It's... it's not."
    "What--"
    "No."

We made our way over to the tall aspen tree at a relaxed pace. "Hey, Anna!" Ethan called out. She looked up, and for the first time I noticed how pretty she actually was.

She looked up at me from behind her big black glasses. Her eyes were the most brilliant blue, and her blonde hair fell in waves down her back. The shirt she was wearing featured a galaxy triangle, and she wore black leggings with combat boots.

    Hipster.

    Ethan smiled flirtatiously. Again. "Hellooooooo."
"Hey there," she replied. "Nick, was it?"
"Ah, no," he said. "I'm Ethan. That's,"--he pointed at me--"Nick."
"Hey there again," I said, smiling.
"Oh, sorry!" she giggled nervously. "Sorry, new school, new faces, everything!"
"That's fine," he replied smoothly, leaning towards her. Oh, no, I knew that tone. And that posture. He was totally about to flirt with her. "As long as you remember mine." A wink. I groaned.
"That was the worst thing I have ever heard," I told him, and smacked him across the back of his head. Ethan, with his hand on his hip and the other in the air, said, "Sorry, that's where my occipital lobe is? Like, can you not? Because like, I could go blind? So like, can you not?" he asked in a very sassy tone.

Anna giggled, and I groaned. "Seriously, don't encourage him. Anyway, what's up? Why are you all alone?" I asked her, cocking my
head to one side. Ethan nodded in agreement.
    "Mm, yes, why so lonesome?"
"Well," she began thoughtfully, "I'm new, so I don't have that many friends."

We both nodded in agreement. We'd all been the new kid once, and of course we'd hated having no friends. "Then consider us--" He gestured to himself and I. "--your friends." And with a smile, promptly plopped himself on the ground next to her.

She smiled sweetly at him. Then she looked up at me and her blue eyes pierced my heart.

I looked at Ethan and his eyes told me that he wanted alone time. Of course, I rolled my eyes at him.

Well, I didn't, but I did on the inside.

"Oh... I need to go get ready for our next class, see you two later yeah? And Ethan, don't scare her off." I shot him a wink and walked off, into the building, avoiding stragglers.

Her blue eyes. They were... nice. I shook my head from side to side trying to regain my wits. I had quite a way to walk, so I picked up the pace.

    By a lot.

I rushed into the bathroom, and stood at the sink, looking into the mirror.

I remembered that look she gave me. What was that about?

I looked into the glass, and my grey eyes stared back at me. My hand went through my darkish brown hair as I combed it back and gave it a light tousle. I wet my hand and rubbed the back of my neck and observed my tanned skin. Was it just me or was it rather hot?

It was probably just me. With a shrug, I dried my hands, picked up my
bag, and pushed open the door.
