Happy Place

My little happy place is a box.

A box with broken tiles and cracks in the walls.

With soft paddings on the floor and a chair.

A chair made of rotten oak.
    ----

Moaning. It was a wake up call for me, every single day. It was a rude awakening, when I open my eyes to find myself strapped to a chair.

I used to cut myself with my fingernails. I remember the wound opening after it healed, because I kept ripping apart my own flesh.

The blood was fresh. Crimson, with the coppery taste of it still lingering in my mouth.

The sensation of bleeding was pleasent. It was like another alarm ringing in my head, telling me to wake up.

But alas, an idealist is devoted to their fantasies, never leaving their happy place, even if it kills them not to.

    -----

My neighbor is rambuctious. He's an eccentric, extremely deformed friend of mine. We communicate through morse code.

The doctors dismiss it as a symptom of his disorder, not giving two shits about what we do. He kicks, I kick, we kick until somebody walks in and replaces the wall paddings.

Today, the chair had fell and my head met the floor. Unlike his box, mine didn't have concrete. I didn't care, though. I kept kicking and kicking and kicking. It was fun.

One day, they'll replace them with sound proof material, so I'll never get to talk to him again.

    -----

The doctor came in today. He held something in his hand. It was a syringe, no doubt. I'd protest, but months after being locked up in my happy place, I knew that resistence was futile. I simply obliged and looked down while he injected the stuff into my bloodstream, therefor making me unconscious.

In my dream, I could make out two silouhettes exiting the room. Bright light left with them.
    -----

My neighbor didn't talk today. No morse code. I stuck my ear to the wall, hoping to hear him.

My efforts in vain, I scoot the chair away until a shriek of pain caused me to scream and claw at the wall.

    "TEDDY?!"

That was his name. He lost an eye and it was replaced with a button, and he had stitches on his left cheek, the needle still hanging. His big blue eyes reminded me of an abused and neglected toy, thrown away into a dark abyss, forgotten.

Thirty seconds of excruciating noises coming from an agonised Teddy made me cry. The tears kept coming.

Crystal droplets of water fell onto my knee. I looked up and realized that a pipe had leaked, and the water was hitting my lap. I cried even more, my tears in sync with the falling water.

    ----

Footsteps were heard. The doctor left Teddy's room. I gasped for air and inhaled black smoke, coming from nearby. I screamed even louder.

    "TEDDY! TEDDY! WHERE ARE YOU?!"

My chair rocked, my head banging against the padding. I cursed something incoherent, saying very bad things. Why couldn't it be concrete?!

Mother always said that if you wanted someone to live, you had to sacrifice a bit of your own blood.

I don't want Teddy dead, Augustus was a horrible neighbor who kept harassing me.
    ----

They went and done it. Teddy's corpse was hauled out, the wheels rolling. I stared at the little bit of light emitting from outside, and sang a song, for Teddy.

"One day, when binds are tied... I'll hold up my head high... And wait for us to reunite... Cross my heart, hope to die... I'll abide to this hopeless lie..."

My head rolled to one side and the next, as I felt a streak of tears fall down my cheek and onto the soft padding floor.

    ----

The room had a pungent smell. It reeked of gas.

Augustus was banging on the walls, telling me in morse code to stop crying... And other things. I screamed, and screamed, and screamed, causing doctors to run to Augustus and inject him with some sort of chemical. Teddy would've told him to shut up, Teddy would've kicked hard and scream at Augustus to die in a bottomless pit.

    ---

Augustus was taken to another room. Doctors didn't want noise, doctors wanted us to rehabilitate. I rolled around, after chewing off the blood and saliva soaked bindings.

"Happy place... Happy place... It's somewhere you won't escape..."

    Won't escape, won't escape.
    ----

Doctor took me to another room today. There was a mattress with sproings, and words painted on the walls.

    'TH15 15 7H3 3ND F0R HUMAN17Y'
    ----

Doctors came in today. Doctors looked grim. A month or two has passed since Teddy's death, and I still was in rehab. One of the two pulled a syringe out of their labcoats, injecting me with something. It wasn't the usual dose... The other doctor injected more. The pain caused me to scream.

I saw flashes of memories and a vision where Teddy was frowning at me, engulfed in flames. Why was he frowning?

Black covered everything, and as I opened my eyes, I was greeted with white.

"Happy place... Happy place... It's somewhere you won't escape..."
